Professor Strickland was one of my favorite professors. He is very determined to see you pass and improve as a writer and deeply cares for his students. You have 3 or 4 essays assigned, and a research outline and case study at the end of the semester. He gives you tons of time and feedback to complete these. You tell him what grade you deserve

He is so passionate about the class it makes it so much more interesting than what it is. It is an interactive class more than a reading course and the final project is a lot of fun. I would take him again if I could.

If you do not car for the environment, get out of his English class. Everything you read, write and talk about has to do with nature. It has taught me a lot but the books we read are fairly boring. You have work due every Tuesday which is not bad and you have 5 papers, one is a research paper. You need to work hard on your papers.

One of the best teachers I have had at Elon. He has lived through what he teaches so he knows what he is talking about. Beat Generation is a great class. Take him.

On the first day of class, I was really excited, but the class quickly turned into much more work. It's not that the work is hard, but it requires a ton of time outside of class and if you have other commitments, it becomes a hassle. The class was created for him to pontificate about philosophy, and there is no structure. But it's an easy A.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. this is not an english class. all he talks about is the environment. i learned nothing about english or writing and the amount of work he gives is actually ridiculous for this level course. unless you love spending 4 weeks talking about DDT and useless environmental issues... do not take this class.

Great guy! His English class was infused with the environment which was a little boring but he's very nice and tries hard to get the class engaged. A lot of work but worth it in the end. a bit of a hard grader too but its easily overlooked. He is very helpful with papers.

I took his Beat Generation class a couple years ago and I highly recommend it! I'm not a good student by any stretch of the imagination, but I still got an A. Such interesting material, and from someone with first-hand experience. I still think about this class more than any other one I've taken. Mind is shapely; art is shapely

freshmen if you're assigned Strickland, please do yourselves a favor and drop his class the first week of school. Take any other professor. Take my word for it, he might not seem too bad the first couple days of class but it only gets worse.

I did not learn anything! It's a lot of work compared to the other English classes. It's not even a writing class, it's an environmental issues class. All papers, books, and assignments are about the environment. Makes you do a research project on the environment. He's never prepared. Avoid at all cost

Very passionate about the environment... I thought I had signed up for the wrong class because I did not learn anything about English. His assignments are HORRIBLE and he is very unclear about what he wants. He has made me hate the environment now so if you aren't a supreme tree hugger- don't take the class.

Im a junior, and The Beat Generation is the best class Ive taken at elon so far.. and Im not even an english major. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time reading and actually doing some work over winter term. Its worth it though: strickland is a legit resource, a fair teacher, and clearly really enjoys teaching this class.

Class is based entirely on environment, so unless you are interested in it, it will be quite boring. He is a really cool guy, but not a great teacher. He had us write two 15 single spaced papers, and then halfway through one of them told us to just forget it. There is a TON of writing, so if you don't want to write a lot, don't take his class!

Great guy, TERRIBLE professor. He is a cool guy to sit and talk to, but he takes this 100 level, required course WAY to seriously. This class is much more difficult than it should be and if you by some unfortunate event end up in his class, prepare for the worst. His class is long, boring, and has lots of stupid assignments. Good luck and Godspeed.

Really nice guy and gives you a lot of feedback on writing but it is SO much work for a college writing class. While all of my friends were writing BUSINESS LETTERS, i was writing a 15 page single spaced research paper along with another paper in the same class at the same time. He is honestly a great guy but its so much work for a required course

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! This class is not "college writing" as the name suggests, but rather an environmental science course. All you do is talk about the environment and then write ridiculous papers that he grades then destroys with the power of Thor's Hammer. Entirely too much work for a required class. Avoid like the plague it is.

Not a good class if you just want to knock out your College Writing requirement. Be prepared not only to write, but to write about your writing and write about HOW you write about your writing. An abundance of tedious and unnecessary work that in the end, does very little other than waste your time. Cool guy though..
