Paul is really sweet and completely willing to help you with the course. His lectures can be a bit boring but that's most likely to due with the material, he also does take a long time explaining simple concepts in the labs but I would still recommend taking him for this course. Both of the course are just not very interesting or well set up.

Really boring online course. Ripley is a fantastic professor but teaches dry courses. If you're looking to do a Sociology elective, this may be the one for you.

His lectures are very organized. He posts notes online, but I recommend to go to class as his notes are only outlines and the juicy stuff which he expects you to know for the exam is only given during the class. Class will be more interested if you have questions for him during the class. If everyone be quiets it will be boring

Very sweet guy, but takes forever in labs to explain something that takes 2 minutes..... definitely take Paul over Anton though. Anton is even more of a nightmare

100% take Dr. Ripley over Anton! I started going to Dr. Ripley's labs sometimes instead of Anton's and I went from getting 50-75% on labs to 90-100%. My papers also went from a 75 to a 85 after getting help from Ripley. He will answer ANY question no matter how long it takes. A little dry, takes things slow, but super nice guy!

Paul is a very sweet man, you can tell he respects the material he's teaching as well as his students! Tends to go off on a bit of a tangent sometimes but overall he's a great prof and I'd highly recommend him, especially for the mandatory SOCI 3040/3041 courses for SOCI majors!

Terrible prof. Avoid at all costs. Lectures are boring and he goes off topic way too much. Hard not to fall asleep in his class.

Prof is great, but the courses aren't. Very unclear and unorganized (especially 3041). Paul is very sweet, and if you ask for help, he will give it to you. Tough marker, expects a lot. Overall, terrible course, nice prof. Don't take it unless you need it.

Paul Ripley is by far the most understanding and genuine professor I've had at MUN. He is one of the only profs who is willing to go the extra mile to see his students pass. If you need anything clarified he will explain it until you know what you should. Such a great person and it really reflects through his teaching.

Dr. Ripley is a wonderful prof who is honestly interested in helping you do as well as you can in his course(he offered to go through my midterm with me to prep me for the final). Since you have to do this class, it's lucky to have him teaching. I'm taking another of his classes now. A very positive experience. He has a very gentle personality.

The workload for this course was extremely easy. However, The instructor (Paul Ripley) was a nightmare. He took days to answer a email, all evaluation was marked on the bell curve and even though we were given criteria to meet for online discussion posts, the grade given didn't correlate with the criteria.

The course is really dry and boring, but the prof was great. He knows his information and is willing to listen to all opinions shared in the class. He gives exactly what will be covered on exams in class prior to the exam. Grades fairly. Is a very nice man.

plus 3041. The lab is a bit unorganized, students didn't know what they were doing until it was re-explained but far better then Anton for labs by far. Very nice, understanding, and helpful. Would recommend him, not the class.

Awful awful course. But Ripley was very nice and very helpful throughout. He is very welcoming if you go to him during office hours and will take as much time as you need to help you. He really did seem interested in having his students do well, its just a shame that this course is mandatory for sociology majors and minors.

Does not respond to emails. Midterm was brutal and didn't test knowledge gained, but specific who said this and that. Worst distance course I have taken to date.

For a distance course, I was taken back by the next to none input from the professor. He rarely responds to email and did not return our mid term. The midterm itself was very unfair with specific "who said what" questions. The final & online discussions were straight forward enough but I was still unimpressed with the way this course was presented.

Pros: very nice guy, knows his stuff well, gives good notes, narrowed down the final and told us what to study, gives optional assignments Cons: classes were boring (0nly maybe 2 classes that were interesting all year), notes require detailed reading from the book to understand and do well on his multiple choice which can be somewhat difficult

Like a Grandpa! Very nice man who is willing to help his students which is great BUT for the course. Classes are dull, a lot of readings and tested only in Multiple Choices format so if your not good and multiple choice then goood luck!

Paul Ripley is an AMAZING prof! He can be a bit dry at times.. But what else can you expect from an intro sociology course? He's a very nice and approachable prof. Read his notes & the important chapters of the text and class is a breeze!
