He makes you buy his textbook (on a CD, so you pay addition to print it), but you barely use it. He is unclear about expectations. His only grades are determined by one 20 page paper and a vocab test. All assignments support final grade. Study vocab. Do assignments right the first time. Pay attention, because he won't explain it later when you ask.

To be honest this was one of the worst English classes I have taken. Your entire grade is basically 1 paper and a vocab test. He has you turn in weekly drafts but gives terrible feedback. He is typically unclear on how to do an assignment, and the whole class seems confused, the textbook is of no help. It is also impossible to check your grade.

Great teacher. Worked on final 20 page paper the whole semester. Don't buy the textbook, I never opened mine. Lectures are dry, but it's English so.. turn stuff in and study for the vocab test (there is no vocab quizzes:) at the end and you'll pass with flying colors. Would definitely take him again. One of my favorite teachers.

Dr. Tanner is a tough teacher. His class can often be confusing. However, if you take his class seriously and really set time aside to do the work it is rewarding. If you are in his class let me suggest start writing your paper as soon as he tells you about it. The sooner you know what your paper is going to shape up to be the better you'll feel.

Dr. Tanner really knows his stuff when it comes to English! He trains you to do professional writing, so for after graduation. Your homework is to research something you like and then write a paper on it (through lectures he gives you all the tools you need). His grading is very helpful and he is very accessible if you have questions.

I learned SO much in this class. It was hard and I had to work for my grade, but I became better at writing. Dr. Tanner is very willing to help. He always offers the invitation to meet with him, email him, or even call him if you're not understanding something in class. The final paper was tough though, 80% of your grade, so save time for it.

I was not alone in my dislike for Dr. Tanner. The entire class was left confused and usually hopeless by the end of it all. Tanner does not set a clear schedule, does not set clear guidelines, and expects near perfection. I would seriously avoid this class. Average grade on papers was a C- and said that he grades tough to motivate you.

Dr. Tanner knows his stuff, and I found him pretty interesting to listen to; though, sometimes his lectures do seem to be completely off topic. His grading is a little confusing, and he does have some very specific ideas about writing that you have to cater to for his class that may not help you in other classes. Overall an easy class though!

One of the best teachers at UVU! I am not an English Major, nor am I great at writing, but Dr. Tanner helped me improve my writing confidence and abilities. Don't worry about your current writing skills, he takes you from where you are and makes you better. Simply turn in assignments (which usually were short, but focused papers) and do your best.

This class rocked my world. It was so hard, but so worth it. I worked harder than I ever have in any individual class, but I didn't just learn, I gained more character. Rigorous work, but exceptional preparation for the real world. One of the top 3 professors I've ever had. Super funny, very genuine man. He could motivate a rock to work hard.

He has high standards. His ENGL 2010 class prepares you for upper-level research papers. He gives you all the tools you'll need as you progress in school and write academic papers. No other professor at UVU is as thorough in that regard. His class is for serious students who plan on doing a masters thesis or doctoral dissertation in the future.

Shakespeare English. Great class, interesting subject matter. Makes learning Shakespeare enjoyable. Dr. Tanner is one of the best professors I've had: upbeat, professional and extremely knowledgeable. Would highly recommend this class.

Paul is a really nice guy, but I would never reccommend his class. I would only take his class if you are interested in learning a completely new writing style. If you do take it, listen carefully to everything he says in class. Make sure you incorporate all of his rules into your papers. Don't be too upset by a low paper grade, keep working hard!

Do not take this class. He will not give you a real grade ever. Does not how to explain what he really wants on his papers. He really knows a lot about English. However, does not know how to teach them.

Never writes anything own, just lectures, no blackboard, no hand outs, no grading rubric, and he expects you to incorporate every tiny detain into your paper that he mentions in class, even if its just in passing. Vague instruction, and not concise at all.

He is great to work with and super nice. The problem is, he doesn't use a consistent grading system and your grade is reflective of the grade how he "feels" you deserve. He does teach a strong format for research papers, but there are other teachers willing to grade fairly at UVU, overall I wouldn't take his class again.

I loved Dr. Tanner's class. If you're going to take rhetorical theory, take it from him. There weren't a lot of homework assignments but the ones he gave were pretty time-consuming but very useful. My writing skills improved by leaps and bounds this semester. He taught us how to think for ourselves. I would definitely recommend this professor!

Paul was such an amazing teacher! his assignments were tough if you were not in class to hear what exactly what he wanted. He was always so willing to help any student willing to ask. He knows his stuff and drills it into your head. He was not willing to move on until everyone knew exactly what he was talking about! I LOVED PAUL!!!
