Nice guy. Takes attendance every lecture. he won't call people out, if you're hand isn't raised, if won't ask you to answer a question. One midterm and one final, both essays, non cumulative. Easy class. Read if you want to, but he will talk about the assignment in class for a few days, and he reviews prior to exams.

His books are more interesting than he is. All in class exams are very difficult, unless you are one of the favorites, in which case he will bump your grade up a few notches. Keeps no office hours. Refuses to allow extra credit work. He is very intelligent. A famous and successful philosopher, but has little teaching skill.

Kivy is clearly smart; he's just not a great professor. Didn't know anyone's names. He focused on reading check questions. Often tries to make fun of students. Weird physical movements and bird-like appearance were endearing, however...he's a quirky grandpa. Attendance taken, plus a midterm and final. Hope he's better in higher-level classes

I loved Kivy when I took him a couple years ago. I thought he was by far and away one of the most intelligent people I've ever met, and one of the best quality professors. Sometimes even funny! And I'm someone who readily reviews a professor as boring or dumb. I think people who are more philosophy-oriented than arts-oriented will love him.

Comment:
Kivy is very intelligent, but his discussions are not inviting. He mainly wants to check if people have read the material, and asks boring questions. The discussions are superficial and he does not maintain control with any authority. He addresses questions by insulting the questioner by connotation of their ignorance. Avoid if possible.

Kivy is one of the most brilliant professors in the Dept. He is very off-putish at first and intimidating to approach after class?BUT, if you do speak with him you will find he is one of the most helpful and thoughtful people at RU. His course is very fair ? know your stuff and you?ll get an A. Don't take him if your lazy or dumb.

i liked him, he's a cute little old man and he seemed interested in the material. only need to know what he talks about in class so you dont really have to read. midterm, final and attendance is your grade so as long as you go to class, take notes and study for exams then you'll be fine

I really wanted to take this class just as something interesting and different. Unfortunately Kivy is incredibly boring and monotonous. He seems to assign grades randomly, and expects you to think exactly like he does. Entire grade based on one paper after he threw out the midterm. Don't take this prof if you don't intend to be a philosophy major.

Kivy is brilliant but not every1 sees it. He can be confusing but he'll def try to clear things up if u ask. No papers. Only a midterm and a final comprised of essays. Not too hard but u gotta work for it: take good notes. he teaches through examples and analogies. dont just mistake them for mindless banter

I was interested in this class before taking it with this professor. He's very boring & monotone. He's very unfair in the grading. Exams are essays from the readings. If you like philosophy & know the material prior to this class don't take it, it's too hard for an introduction class to philosophy

Genius. Not in the standard academic way but makes you think and does NOT allow for b.s. if you like challenges and you like not to be spoon fed a class he's top notch. if your not interested in the course material you'll hate him.

he is way too old and does not know what is going on. This shows in his inability to complete a clear sentence within 10 minutes. I love art and philosophy and I could not stay interested at all.

Immature and simple students will not appreciate him. He's brilliant and revered in his field - his class was incredibly interesting and refreshing. However, he happens to despise idiotic and slow students so if you're not excited by philosophy, dont join

He's a great professor, he loves to discuss with students and he doesn't treat them like kids so they find him harsh we makes adult sized rebuttals. He gives good examples and explains all the key concepts in class, he is cut out of the right cloth.
