This isn't the class to take if you want an "easy A". This class actually serves a good goal in elevating your writing abilities, even in the slightest. Expect a lot to cover, but with plenty of time to cover it.

Lots of papers and reading, but she's really only looking for effort. If she calls you out in class, she really just wants to hear her thoughts, so you can make something up until she tells you what the 'right' answer is. If you have something to contribute to discussion and get help on essays every now and then, she'll love you.

She is very dry, not helpful, and will expect you to read her mind. And if you dont, she will storm out of class saying you wasted her time and then send your entire class a rude email. She expects you to understand the "deeper meaning" behind everything you read before you show up to class.

Ries is a fantastic teacher but she expects your all. This class was Shakespeare and we read about 4 plays a semester. She gives 2 informals per play and you write 3 major essays a semester. Tough grader, but makes you really think about the topic. She's a genius and will make you a better writer. Helps you with anything you need. Just have to ask.

Be prepared to read a TON and write a TON. 1000 word essay every week. 4 1300 word essays throughout the semester. Would recommend just sparknoting the reading because it is too much and is all covered in class. She also grades essays incredibly hard. If you are going into the honors program, do the Uncle Tom's Cabin class, it's 100x easier.

Helpful, fairly understanding. Really likes her job and is very knowledgeable on the material. Each Shakespeare play is taught the same way. No tests, 3 major Formal Essays and a short essay every week. Good class if you are interested in Shakespeare

I had like no time to do the reading. Very rushed class. Lots of papers and reading. Her quizzes are difficult for the amount of time we have to read. You know what she expects, but its some times difficult to follow through. Her class can sometimes stress me out.

Lots of writing and reading, seems to be in her own little world... we had 5 papers assigned within 2 weeks once. Expects near perfect work to get an A-- 200 points in the semester and a 95% is an A. Be prepared to read a lot, write a lot, and ask to revise your papers if you want an A.

First semester, wasn't a fan. Quizzes were hard. Second semester, the class was much less-stressful, and the class actually became fun. I have a friend in a different class of hers who always complains about Ries, but in our class, she is always nice and joking around. If the students MAKE the class fun, it will be.

Professor Ries has been my favorite professor so far. If you back up your opinion, she will consider your views. She wants everyone to do well and so while she is not always the easiest grader it is for the best of the student

Had her for Heroic Temper. The problem with Ries is that she is the kind of teacher who wants to hear her opinion and nobody else. She is also a grade killer. But she is very easy on datelines and has a passion for what she teaches. Basically just tell her what she wants to hear and use the writers studio. And you can get a good grade in the class

Pretty difficult on her grading. We had many one page papers to write. Very low amount of points so if you don't do well on one paper you are screwed.

She is the hardest teacher I have ever had. We had a paper due every class and she graded impossibly. And in order to get an A in the class in you need to get above a 95%. Impossible for her.

Very interesting professor, extremely knowledable in the greek tradedies. SHe kept me focused on what we were learning. Hard course load tho, piled it on at the end of the semester, but it didn't turn on disasterous.
