He's super smart and passionate about what he teaches. As others have mentioned, he's not very organized, but to me he made up for it by being incredibly kind and approachable. The draft conferences for his essays made me a better writer--I'm sure I would've done worse without them, since, like many English professors at Smith, he's a hard grader.

A little disorganized, but really nice! He lets you submit a rough draft first and works with you to actually improve your essays. Lots of variety in what we studied. Speaking up in class is super important.

Professor Millington is a great professor and a strong choice for a first year seminar professor as he offers a draft system for essays. However, he is very energetic and often will drift off mid thought which can make sitting through class a little tough sometimes.

Comment:
Professor Millington is a very caring professor and very helpful outside of class, but his genuine excitement for the material can be a bit distracting as he can't sit still due to how passionate about the subject he is. There is no doubt that he is brilliant though, and I would definitely take another class with him.

Obsessed. Hilarious to watch (like a squirrel on crack) but very helpful during office hours. He's kind of a mess and not a fantastic lecturer (he could go on for hours), but he is clearly a genius and makes a big effort to keep class discussion going.

Very nice and helpful, but pretty hard. I put in a lot of effort, but could never break the A- barrier. I liked the class otherwise. Probably wouldn't take another though.

Rick Millington is brilliant, and his classes would be especially useful to anyone interested in early American literature, as this is his specialty. He is also greatly helpful when you're stuck on paper topics.

Millington was great with his comments on papers, very helpful when discussing a paper to make it better. That said, his class was SOOOO boring. I dreaded it every afternoon I had it. I had to stab myself with my pencil to stay awake. His helpfulness with pure writing is good, but I could barely stay awake in class.

Very nice guy, but honestly, I would not take another class with him. I found him difficult to understand and also quite boring. His class made me dislike English quite a bit. . . a sad feat as I wanted to be an English major before school. He's old-school, so be warned. Also, the portfolio at the end will be stressful. Be wary of this class.

I equate Rick to an ADHD squirrel. He's up, he's down, he's pounding the desk, scribbling on the board... it's distracting. Plus, he spends the first 30 minutes of class reviewing what the NEXT class will be about - I hate that.

He has an infectious enthusiasm for the material. However, I would say that my greatest complaint was his ability to be on time: he ended class late every session, turned in papers late, and even took an extra week to get final grades turned in. Only take this class if those factors don't concern you, because he is very knowledgeable.

Brilliant professor, but extremely awkward face-to-face. I learned a lot about writing and analyzing literature from him. Go to him with your paper ideas and he's a lot of help! He jumps around a lot in his lectures but his enthusiasm for his subject is infectious. He made me love Moby Dick- no small feat.

He is a very boring professor and doesn't know how to teach to a large class. If you take his class, have fun sleeping. Also, his comments on papers are not helpful whatsoever!

Decent class. Rather boring lectures sometimes. He's a good teacher though. Didn't feel like a Writing Intensive (we did 3 papers).
