Bill Oram is the best teacher I've ever had. He explains concepts very well and is one of the few teachers who won't give you a bad grade just because you disagree with him. He encourages in depth conversation in the subject material and makes it his business to make sure you feel heard. If you ever have a problem his door is always open.

Comment:
His class on Milton whooped my butt (non-English major) but he made the class so enjoyable I didn't even mind. Oram was so nice, and gave such thorough feedback on papers. If it hadn't been my last semester, I would have taken more classes with him!

Comment:
Reading Shakespeare alone in your room can get tough. But once in class, Bill asks for volunteers to help perform specific parts, which really helps. He poses many good questions to keep the discussion going. I loved this class. You'll practice putting your thoughts on paper both in essays and short moodle posts, and in lively class discussions.

He is simply the best. I was not a confident writer, but he changed that radically. He made me want to take all his classes. He is extremely helpful both in and outside of the classroom. Very, very nice. Not an easy grader, but he makes all the work worth it!

Professor Oram is an amazing teacher. He truly wants to help students, and is open to any ideas discussed in class. He is also understanding about difficulties involving the work load and gives extensions if you need them. He would rather have students turn papers in that are higher quality. He also gives a lot of advice. Don't expect an A though.

such an amazing professor! they don't come any better. I had him for my FYS Utopia and Human Nature, and although it was a very intensive work load, there is no busy work. The work he assigned got every person thinking about the readings so that when we came to class we had the best discussions of any of my classes. I could not recommend him higher

I've only been in his class for a month, and I already agree with other posters: he was born to profess. He gives ample comments on papers (expect half a page of typed advice) and grades fairly. Rather than dominate the class, he knows when to step back and let us talk. He's also extremely friendly and he knew everyone's name by the third class!

Famous for his Shakespeare class, but notable also for Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction, the most fun I've ever had in an English class. He grades hard and makes you a better writer by it. His lectures are always interesting and he leads great discussions.

O MI GOD! SO totally take shakespeare with this man..he is just simply remarkable. Apart from making classes fun and interesting, Bill does not try to squeeze out like a 10 papers or anything out of u..the work load is extremely reasonable and u only have 2 papers, of which too u write drafts and what not. Shakp. w/Bill = awesomeness x infinity

I took every class I could with Bill. He's a master. And because his great qualities are too many to list, I will tell you just a few. 1st, he doesn't dominate. He facilitates discussion and lets the students illuminate the points as a group. 2nd, he taught me--over time--to write sound essays. 3rd, he respects his students and serves them well.

What a passionate, brilliant man -- how he made the English canon come alive to me! I fell in love when he read aloud, "My heart in hiding stirred for a bird . . . " Everyone should take 200 with this man.

You will never forget Bill's classes, even though you may get a bit fuzzy on your Spenser. (And I know -- I was taking his classes in the late 1970s).

Bill was born to be a professor. I think he's the best professor at Smith. Always pressing you to work harder and search deeper. Really has a passion for all he teaches. "Any of the biographies on Spenser are good. Mine's good." --Bill Oram
