retired, still teaching. went off topic. rants about unseen movies by our age group. leaves grading to TA Meredith who held her head a bit too high. We were supposed to have 4 tests. ran out of time, canceled the last, made last two take home. Last was graded on 2 classes of material. the class was everywhere. hard to tell how ur doing in the class

Rob is awesome. Highly entertaining class although you need to be interested and pay attention to do well. Get on his good side by participating and getting him to know your name and give you +5 on your average answering some random question. He gives extensions on the take home exams freely, has a real personality, and makes class worth going to.

I understand what people are saying about how his slides and notes are confusing, but he or the TAs always took the time to explain things if ppl asked. He's also really passionate about soc and SO entertaining. The readings were long but usually interesting and there were no papers, just tests and quizzes. For the most part, I loved this class

I completely agree with the person who posted on 11/22/09! I was looking forward to this class but now must force myself to go to listen to him rant about whatever he feels like. He talks in circles, never answers student's questions clearly, is unorganized, sounds like he makes it all up as he goes along, and wasted my time. Don't take his classes

Had this guy for 342 and liked the class, but 347 was awful. He suddenly had ridiculously high expectations, most of which he never really explained clearly. He didn't even grade tha papers, the TAs did, and they were even harder graders. Attendance is mandatory and you aren't even allowed to miss a few classes before penatly. Wouldn't recommended.

Class sounded interesting at the beginning, but now I have to force myself to go. Faulker is a nice guy and wicked funny, but his lectures are incomprehensible BS, the slides are repetitive and go in circles, and half the readings he wants used in the papers aren't even posted online. He needs to get his act together with a coherent lesson plan.

not the most interesting, but really really ridiculously easy class - as long as you go to lecture. not much focus on the assigned readings, except on the final, but again as long as you went to class you knew what he was looking for.

Faulkner is awesome. Class is all about how to steal and scam people. Just go to class (its usually fun) and you will get a good grade. One of the best at umass.

Took Deviance and Social Order, as well as Corporate Crime. I thought the classes were great but some people just don't get the topics... like how legal authorities can be corrupt!? Great classes, he's cool, blunt, crazy about topics, and fun.

Faulkner thinks he's a tough guy at first but he really isn't, he uses a lot of profanity at times. The exams are all essay and they are from the readings and lectures. Once you figure him out he isn't that bad (and he checks this site)

BORING! Prof. Faulkner puts the class to sleep, and then he yells at students when he's PMS-ing. Probably b/c of his old age. Anyway, be careful with the tests, it's near impossible to do well unless you read all ten articles required per test..each article being 30-50 pages long!

No books required, but his tests are really hard. He def. plays favorites with some classmates. Lectures are convuluted, and goes on rants. DO NOT SLEEP in his class, he will throw a hissy fit like a child. Lots of E-reserve articles to read.

took his social deviance class, no textbook, but he can be a tool sometimes, acts like he's in the mafia but we all know he isn't. He probably wishes he was, instead of a wannabe. He can be corny sometimes but he uses a lot of movie references.

Interesting guy. Involves the class a lot. He is very animated and loves the class he teaches and the materials. No book, all articles (which can be hard to keep up with). My only critizism is that he lets the TAs make the tests and quizes and they grade them (he takes no part except for helping make the questions). Their grading technique is tough

this guy is great, very upbeat and into his lectures, keeps you alert and entertained as well as informed. the first "quiz" is tough but it is scaled...also, do readings and go to class and the exams aren't bad at all...def take a class with Faulkner if you can
