Does not know how to teach and usually spends a whole class for just one problem. He grades extremely harsh on exams - he will deduct points even if your answer is correct because it has to be done his way. Just do not take him as you will not learn anything.

Grades incredibly hard, answers to problems have to be done "his" way or you get multiple points off and rarely credit given for work done. Often doesn't know what he's teaching and is corrected often. Only plus is that you can use your notes for class.

Really confusing, doesn't seem to know the material he is teaching. Very boring. Takes forever to get through examples and constantly makes mistakes. Nice person but bad professor. Doesn't understand any questions that are asked. Only positive is that tests are open book.

Gethner is a great guy and is very intelligent. But, his class is very boring. He rarely goes over homework, and will typically do one problem that he enjoys doing in class. Seriously, only one problem per a class. He does allow you to use notes on exams, which is helpful. He does take a very long time to grade though. If you prepare you're fine.

Gethner is really sweet but is just not a great professor. His class is pure lecture and answering questions from homework assignments. Sometimes he'd spend the entire hour long class on one problem that could have been easily completed and explained in 15 minutes. The tests were open notes though, which was nice.

Gethner is a good guy, a little awkward but is a really good dude at heart. Sometimes he gets a little of track in class. If you develop a good student-teacher relationship with him, he'll help you out. Takes notes in class and you'll be fine.

Professor Gethner is passionate about math but really doesn't know how to articulate that in his teaching. He'll spend far too long explaining trivial things and makes concepts unclear at times. As long as you do your homework you should be ok, but know that the class will be boring. He'll love you if you participateask questions.

Professor Gethner is great!! I loved his class and tests are open notes, open book. He is really helpful and if you ask questions he'll love you. He can also explain things many different ways which really helped me. Take this class!

Super boring, does no example problems only derives all of the formuals. you would be better off not going to this class at all and just reading the book. oh right the tests are open book though so you should just get ready to teach yourself the material during the test period

Mr Gethner was a brilliant professor. I don't know why the negative reviews. He only tests what he teaches in class and goes slowly enough for everyone to understand. He even dedicates 1 class every week just for doubts and questions. But apart from that he also attends to your problems before every class. He's always so cheerful too. Very helpful.

If you pay close attention and attend every class, you will be able to understand and learn the material. He gets a bit boring at times and goes on tangents about unrelated topics briefly. If you took calculus before, this class shouldn't be too difficult. If you are just starting, he really isn't too clear on explaining certain topics or questions

Take this class if: you want to fall asleep, you want to have no idea what's on each test (they're open book/note), want to listen to the teacher go off on tangents. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Gethner is the worst teacher ever! His classes are easy (as in make you fall asleep as he goes on about elves and magic) but attendance is mandatory. He does not actually teach anything, he just assigns homework to enable you to figure it out on your own, and then has killer exams. Do yourself a favor and stick with McCooey!

I don't know where all the negative comments about Prof. Gethner come from, but he's seriously the best math teacher I have EVER had in my life - very understanding, thoughtful, caring, and warm. He does care about you IF you work hard.F&M should hire more people like him!

He is the most boring professor I've ever encountered. I actually don't mind if the math professor is boring. However, he's bad jokes and stories are annoying. Most important is that he is always lost himself in class and totally doesn't know what he is doing.

nice guy, nerdy, makes stupid jokes all the time. very easy class because he moves at a painfully slow pace. it's too bad he takes attendance so seriously, because going to class would otherwise be pointless. lectures are terribly boring. on more than one occasion he has spent two full classes on one problem on material we weren't even tested on.
