I took this as a gened and it was not. If you're already bad at history than this is not the class for you. Alot of reading, quizes every discussion so if you're discussion leader sucks like mine you'll never get higher than a 7/10 even if you do the reading. Entire grade is based off of two tests, the final and then 10% goes to the stupid quizes

I love Professor Jones. I'm so upset that he is retiring. :( I feel bad for all the new students who won't get to listen to his lectures. And I'm sad I won't get to take 316 with him. :(

He makes the material more interesting. Nice guy, helpful, funny. He likes to show slides from his trips to Europe, which is refreshing. He asks a lot from students - a lot of reading and a lot of understanding of material, but he ties it together well.

Comment:

One of the best professors I've ever had at UMass. He's always crystal clear, and he's got a great sense of humor. The work is difficult, though. A good grade is not easy to come by. Plus, he assigns a long paper. I personally never found it hard to manage, but if the interest isn't there, don't take his class.

I've taken all the class he teaches and wish he wasn't retiring next year. He is a good lecturer, funny, and makes class very enjoyable. However you have to do the readings, and for 316 write a 15 pg paper.

Really great class! You have to do work and keep up with it to do well. Prof Jones is an amazing lecturer. He makes everything clear and really brings it all together. He has a sense of humor and actually has been to all the places he talks about. If you like history take this class. You will learn so much, and it will fly by.

This class is unfortunately a giant lecture class, but that makes it so much easier to deal with. The class is so easy it's not even funny, especially if you're a history major! It's hard to get to know Prof. Jones with such a big class, but he's certaintly not unapprochable. He's also pretty funny, tho it seems only history majors get his jokes!

Good class for gen ed or hist major, his lectures are nesesary because he goes into stuff not in the text, and you have to do the readings to pass the quizes, its a tough class but its worth it. I just that this class was way too white man oriented, he didn't talk about social history that much: how sertain aspects of the economy effected everyone.

I loved this class and Professor Jones was my best teacher this semester. He's a great lecturer. The workload isn't too bad but you need to go to class to do well on the tests and read the homework to do well on quizes.

Professor Jones is an excellent professor who is very passionate about his subject. This may not be the best class to take if you are uninterested in history as it does require you to show up and do the readings for discussion. If you have a moderate interest and do the work this is a great class!

If you like history you'll like the class, if you don't, you will loathe it. The man is monotone, boring, and very redundant; however friendly. Personally was a waste of my time and an insult to my intelligence.

All you have to do is go to class and show up for discussion. Weekly discussion quizzes that are so easy just do the reading. Tests are alittle hard, but if you show up to class and do the reading (about 10-20 pages per class) you'll be fine.

good professor, but far too difficult tests. The study sheets are not desigend well or in logical order. The lectures can be boring at times. Terrible discussion in holdsworth every friday with quizzes on lengthy archiac readings of Candide andthe such.
