Comment:
Roger asks a lot of questions to his students which can be beneficial. Sometimes he does come off as insulting. From my experience, I am not a fan of him. I failed one test and he read my grade out to the entire class and belittled me in front of everyone. If you are not the type of person that likes to be called on, then avoid Cavallo at all costs

Roger definitely knows his stuff. He can go off on tangents but they do come back around to the lecture material. He is accessible outside of class and answers his emails within an hour or so. I think in smaller classes (mine had 10 students in it) he is a better professor who cares that we genuinely know the material. He is a great guy all around.

His lectures seem to drag on while covering little material. The real problem is what he is teaching from. Cavallo has a book he teaches from that is not in print anymore so he gives another book the stresses different sections than he does. This leads to tests that are very difficult that rely on how well you can remember those small bits not big

Comment:
Do not take 413 with this professor. Lectures drag, material is easy to understand, but he makes it sound 10x more complex. Tests? Good luck passing. Asks questions that were not covered either in class or on homework. Homework is given, collected, but never returned. You can go to him for help, but it's just as useless as sitting in his lectures.

Goes off on annoying tangets, does not stay on topic, very hard to follow in class. Ignore everything he says and read the textbook and hope you pass the few tests he gives.

He will ask a rhetorical question, call on someone, and then go off on a 30 minute tangent about something entirely unrelated, and then repeat the process as soon as he runs out of inane things to say that have nothing to do with the course.

He makes easy thing look tough, with indirect explanations. Wish he could use some simple examples to explain a topic rather than introducing his famous acquaintances. Every week hw. Exams are not too tough. 2hrs 30 min lectures, I loose him in first 30 mins. Wish he could give all graded hw's, so that it will be easy for exams.

Best professor I've come across at SUNYIT. Not for timid or easily embarrassed as he routinely calls on random people to answer questions, very few of which are simple or are the rote memorization type. Lectures are incredible; they are more about teaching you how to think properly about a problem than covering the exact material in the book.

Might be one of the most useless teachers I've ever had. Walks into class 20 minutes late every class, and then tells random stories not related to UNIX or what we are doing. Tests are nearly impossible since he puts stuff on there he doesn't go over in class. If you have a choice do NOT take this class with this man. Worst teacher ever.

Comment:
Diabolical tests that are way beyond what is covered in class. The typical class consists of tangents that lead to obtuse questions given to random students that borderline on being insults. The material is difficult, compounded only by his aloof demeanor. A shame because he is incredibly intelligent, knowledgeable, and pleasant outside of class.

good professor. cares about students and administers tough love when they aren't performing. don't take if you're less than serious about studying, have easily hurt feelings, or have a hard time taking responsibility for your grades. do take if you want to learn a lot from a smart and interesting guy. his expectations are very reasonable.

Arguably the worst teacher SUNYIT has to offer. Refuses to use computers to teach UNIX, relying on his "tried-and-true" chalkboard. They should have retired him years ago, instead they school just bought him a $90k car. I'll re-take his class at MVCC down the road where I can actually learn something.

Comes across as a bit of a hard nosed old school professor but also will work with students. Curves grades and usually works with the class average but can be demanding, no doubt.

A useless, incomprehensible professor who mocks students by asking ambiguous questions in an effort to try to make students feel like peons. Avoid at all costs. I was pleased to learn that he no longer chairs the CS dept. Terrible. Hard tests, low grades, no learning. He should retire soon, because he's draining the program.
