Heard good things about him for HUM, but if you can avoid taking his Shakespeare: Poem, Play, Film class, DO IT!!! He retires after Spring 2018, and it'll be safe to take it after that!

I took Shakespeare: Poem, Play, Film with Dr. Herzman, and he is very obviously passionate about the subject, but just not a very good professor for this class. His lectures are incredibly boring, and all of his classes are early so it's easy to fall asleep. He's not a harsh grader, but not available if you need help outside of class either.

Great class. I learned a lot, and always looked forward to the class even at 8:00 am. There are lots of reading assignments and they go fast, but he wont ask you anything on the test that wasn't covered in class--so take really good notes and read as much as you can.

Herzman is my favorite professor so far at Geneseo. If you want a brilliant professor who will throw in the random reference to Facebook or something completely out of left field, Herzman's your man. His class is not overly challenging if you do the work. He is extremely receiving of student opinions and feedback; highly recommend!

Easily one of the nicest, most intelligent, and most down to earth professor ever. Class is never boring and very thought provoking with a nice touch of appropriate humor.

Great professor to have in a small seminar style class. He loves what he does and that makes the classroom experience so much more satisfying. He keeps you interested, thinking and on your toes. Not to mention the fact that he's a hilarious old man.

Great guy! He is hilarious and very intelligent. He's approachable in and out of class, and if you do the reading and talk in class, he really appreciates it. Obviously cares about the subject matter. Not an easy A, but it's possible with hard work.

Herzman is a brilliant professor, a scholar for Dante AND Shakespeare but he has a great way of rehashing things in layman's terms. Your typical lecturer but there is just so much he knows it's an honor to take a class with him. Include DETAILS in your work. People say he's a tough grader, but that's because he can sniff out night before papers

I did not like him as a professor at all. He was not helpful outside of class especially through email. When inquiring about anything he is more likely to negative criticize your work than give constructive criticism. Perhaps he is a better humanities teacher, but as far as Shakespeare is concerned I would not recommend taking him!

Dr. Herzman is a really nice guy and he makes humn concepts pretty easy to understand. He gives you a practice test with half of the same questions as the one you get in class. However, he impossible to please on papers. This class killed my 4.0. If you're okay with a solid B then take humn with him.

Very intelligent, but speaks in a way anybody could understand. However, material is very bland which makes the 8 o'clock class a fight to stay awake. Tests are easy. He is a tougher grader on essays compared to other HUM professors I have heard about. Overall, a nice, modest professor. If you can handle boring stuff in the morning, take him.

Monotonous, very knowledgeable, easy tests, you get a pretest with half the same questions before the tests, early morning class, difficult to stay awake.

Lectures were well-delivered for the most part. Arrogant intelluctualismwas a huge problem for me. Reads the newspaper while you're speaking to him. Well-delivered lectures but needs I would not take for a second course.

For 8 in the morning, this was an awesome class. He is very clear and makes some dense reading material easy to understand. Tests are fair, and the points he tests you on are always emphasized in class. He's approachable outside of class. an incredibly intelligent, friendly man. Plus you get to read Dante with one of the premier Dante scholars!

Professor Herzman was a fantastic professor. Going to class is STRONGLY recommended since what appears on the tests and the paper topics is what is discussed in class. Reading the books is also monumentally important. Herzman is very approachable outside of class and is one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to know.

thought his class was GOOD even for 8 am. Hes a nice guy in class, not too personable outside of class. FAIR amount of reading esp. for humn. He is really EASY TO UNDERSTAND. Take notes read most of the books or at least book reviews go to class. FAIR GRADER on essays and tests. class was easier than i expected humn to be cuz of him.

I loved this class. It was not easy and he is a hard grader, but definitely worth it. Feedback on papers will help you become a better writer. He is certainly fair. Herzman knows alot and if you can make a point for what you say he will listen. Back it up though. You have to do the work but absolutely one of my favorite classes ever.

Herzman essentially bulldozes over any opinions voiced that don't neatly coincide with his own, or modifies them until they do. Seems friendly in public, but will savage you in comments on your paper, employing rhetoric including (but not limited to) "nonsense" and "horrendous." Simply put, he can be too set in his ways, intellectually.

Comment:
Professor Herzman is amiable and helpful, as long as you have done nothing to offend him. He will accept late work if you explain its tardiness sufficiently, but will hold a grudge against absentees. Grading is largely based upon favoritism, and he deals with students with a thinly veiled arrogance that implies, "I wrote the course textbook."
