Dr. Hammerling is seriously one of the most wonderful professors I've ever had. I'm so glad I took his REL 200, even with as hard as it is. He always makes class super interesting, and he really makes you feel like you matter to him. He does a great job of explaining, but be ready to read and write EVERY DAY. All the work is SO worth it though!

He's a tough grader, but he will always meet with you outside of class to discuss your paper. He sat with me for forty-five minutes and we painstakingly went through my whole essay, making it better. He really cares about his students, asking about how you're doing if he sees you around campus.

Great professor, esp. for those seeking challenge. He is incredibly knowledgeable, respectful, kind, and maintains high expectations for his students. I grew academically (lots of reading and writing), gained a much greater understanding of religion, and further developed my own thoughts regarding faith as someone still sorting out my own beliefs.

Dr. Hammerling is an absolutely fantastic professor- don't miss the opportunity to take a class with him. He's one of the wisest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. You will work hard in his class, but he cares deeply about all of his students and you will leave the class with new insight on the world around you.

Required religion is already a pain don't make it more so by taking Hamerling unless you're a religion major or are very interested in religion. He expects a lot out of his classes, his tests are VERY specific, there's A LOT of required reading out of multiple books, but his lectures are very insightful. Very interesting person but a demanding prof

Honestly, I was only taking Religion 300 because it is a requirement, and Dr. Hammerling was the last professor available. I took the class on a Tuesday night from 7-10pm. I was surprised by how captivating his lectures were. He is amazing on meeting outside of class time, and inspired me quite a bit. PS He has some SUPER interesting stories! Do it

Professor Hammerling expects a lot of you from doing the readings, writing assignments, and participating in class discussion. He may tell you that other religion professors assign the same amount, but that is a lie. The matching section is always the smallest detail so beware of that. Only take this class if you are willing to put lots of work in.

Roy seems like a nice guy, however he expects a lot for a class that most people take out of necessity. All religion 300 classes are a lot of work but if you want to survive the semester and keep your sanity, FIND ANOTHER TEACHER.

Dr. Roy Hammerling is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is extremely knowledgeable about the course materials and life in general. The Religion in Film class might be my favorite class I've taken at Concordia. He selects a huge range of films and fosters in-depth and thought provoking conversations. Take a class from Roy if you can!!

Dr. Hammerling, while one of the most difficult classes I have ever had, provide a class that was both inspiration and thought provoking. His class is very book intensive, but it pays off in the end. He is always willing to work with his students to make sure they achieve their best.

I was told that my class with Dr. Hammerling would be my toughest class this semester. While this was true, it was not an impossible class. Yes, the grades can take you down a notch, however Dr. Hammerling is always willing to speak with you about why you received the grade you did and help with future writing projects. The tests are manageable!

Dr. Hammerling is a great professor. He is extremely intelligent and his lectures are always fascinating. He is a tough grader but if you follow his feedback you will learn a lot as a writer and receive better grades. This was one of my favorite classes. Professor Hammerling is a very intelligent man - he's studied around the world! His lectures are great! He is very helpful and easy to approach. He is a biblical scholar - expect a lot about the Bible the first half of the sem. Its really interesting- the history behind it. Lots of reading & he expects a lot with the writing, but grades fair!

Hammerling teaches this class more like a history class than a shove-religion-down-your-throat. He gives an example of what he wants in his essays, which take a little getting used to. YOU WILL LEARN FROM THIS CLASS. Very satisfied with my class and would take Religion 100 with him again, everytime.

Roy Hammerling is one of the biggest intellectual bad asses I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. He knows his stuff, and his lectures are AWESOME. He is super funny, and loves what he does. He is the kind of guy that you could listen to for days. If you have to chance, TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS GUY. He teaches so much about yourself.

Comment:
Less controversial material than other upper religion courses, but has completely unrealistic expectations as far as grading. Usually an A student with very little effort, but spent 4x effort on this course and still pulled Bs and Cs. A good prof apart from grading, but be prepared for a far heavier than usual workload.

I didn't like him when I started the class, I thought he was strict and maybe a little boring. After completing this class he is one of my favorite professors. He is interesting, intelligent and friendly. 9/10 would take again.
