Had him for a previous semester. Gave out the hardest, most confusing and lengthy writing prompts you could ever imagine. In addition, every prompt only focused on teaching us just the same basic concepts, nothing else. The readings, while interesting, are never discussed in class. Avoid him, unless you want another Expos course on your schedule.

Don't take him if you don't want to read. I ended with a B+ and I DEFINITELY had to work for it. As a freshman, it was a lot more difficult than the other courses I took. There was a lot of reading and writing and our TA was pretty useless. Licklider himself is an excellent man and if you can pay attention and put in the work, it is a great class.

I had taken many political science classes before this and I was very excited to take this one. There was an insane amount of reading for this class. I have never been more confused about what the professor or the TA wanted on the paper's in my entire life. They were so unhelpful. I hated this class more than any other class I have ever taken.

Definitely the toughest class I've ever taken. Not an easy A. There are many requirements: 3 papers, 1 final exam, 9 pop reading quizzes, and 2 group works papers. I had to write so much that it did not seem like an intro class. TA sections are super helpful in dealing with assignments. But he requires attendance (not in lectures).

You don't have to really show up to lectures all the time, but taking good notes and reading is essential to passing. He has these notebook quizzes that he randomly gives out.

Tough class. The entire setup is confusing. Spent 23 of the semester talking about how to do good social science (science vs wisdomhow to make a moral argument yada yada) while it should be a course on IR. So far my grades look okay. My TA always feeds me with tips. If you talk to you TA, you're good.

9 Reading quizzes, if you pass 6 its an A, just summarize article in 50 words so just skim through and take notes. There was 3 papers that weren't hard, but he isn't clear so it can be confusing at times. 5 group works in section and they are graded critically. This is not an easy A, you have to work for it... but its possible

Way to much work for a 100 level class. Ridiculous amount of papers and with very confusing prompts. Lectures were also very boring.

He knows his field but I find his lectures monotonous and unclear. Papers are long and he expects a lot, even from an Intro student! TAs explain slightly better than him but I emailed one about some homework and he didnt reply! Reading quizzes pop out of nowhere. I had to study for this course more than any other and eventually dropped it.

Grades papers like they are dissertations--for an intro course. Too many groupwork assignments. Really have to teach yourself the material, he might know a lot but isn't clear or helpful. Also it doesn't help when the TA's do the simulations differently and then you lose points because the information is completely wrong. Ridiculous expectations.

Homeland security was an enjoyable and relevant seminar. Prof Licklider also did a good job in leading the class, he seems underrated on here. Yeah, its a LOT of work and he isnt the easiest grader but the expectations are clear and he's happy to work with you. If you put the effort in theres no reason why you cant get a B. Would def recommend

His lectures are mundane, his assignments are convoluted and he doesn't explain them very clearly, and on top of all this, he grades as if he's expecting doctorate papers for an INTRO course! And it's not like you can go talk to the poli sci undergrad advisor about his technique, because that's who he is! AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

rude man, boring class, too set in his ways. too harsh on grading papers for an intro class. also grades in class assignments too harshly. grade is based on random reading quizzes (in lecture and recitation) 3 papers 4 group in class assignments and take home final. TAs aren't too helpful either. Try to take this class with a different professor

Prof. was really specific on what he wanted on papers and would accept little else but what he was looking for. He was tough to work with and is the typical prototype of an old white guy. He's sort of nice but after going to him for PoliSci advising, he was pretty much useless. Int'l Relations with him wasn't too bad, the papers just sucked

International Relations was my favorite class fall semester. I thought Roy was amazing. Reading quizzes are easy, just read a paragraph because the quiz asks you to demonstrate in 50 words thaat you did the reading. aced all mine and did minimal reading. the group papers suck though, i aced everything but my group got C's and low B's so i got a B+

Took him for 790:319.There are 2 short papers. 5 times you will meet in group and answer question (top 4 count). There are 10 quizzes (top 6 count) sakai discussion and final exam (he lets you pick format) It all sounds like a lot of work but isn?t bc it?s spread out. Material is interesting. Ex: If Pakistan invaded India? If China invaded Taiwan?

Boring lectures, almost impossible to listen to. He has 9 reading quizzes per semester, you must pass 6 to get an A. Assigns an unreasonable amount of reading (Think ~100 pages to be read in 3 days). I have never taken a class where I felt I had learned nothing until this class.

Great class blew a load on all the papers, skim through the readings and you'll beast the mini quizzes..papers aren't so bad either considering you can redo them for a better grade. Roy is the MAN! Youve got to be retarded to not get an A/B in this class

Lectures aren't that helpful unless you think you did poorly on a paper, and you should probably stay and listen to how you were supposed to write it. He usually just rambles on during lecture, the only reason you should go is for the reading quizzes, which you only need to pass 9. Class isn't that hard overall, but attend recitation over lecture.
