Extremely knowledgeable in database administration. Ask any question, and he absolutely nails the answer. More like having a keynote speaker at a conference than a professor, because he has TONS of real world experience. His stories are great and are filled with excellent career advice. One of those classes that help immensely in job interviews.

Lectures were fairly dry most of the time, but I learned a lot about life as a DBA rather than actual SQL or Database Mgmt. The class was a quarter course, so missing classes was not an option. My raw score on most assignments and exams was in the 50 range, but the curve(read: scale) is outstanding. Textbook is optional (Protip: Don't buy it)

Extremely useful course for future librarians. Pay attention in lectures and review the class notes Ted provides--you'll not only do well in the course, but you'll learn a heck of a lot about database design and technology. Very knowledgable instructor and great course.

I am disappointed with the professor chosen to teach this course. His lectures are painfully full of opinions. He makes comments about small business but has no experience outside of working for the state of NY. As if the two are the same. Assignments are graded harshly and correct answers are his opinions. I suggest you avoid this class.

Comment:
The course is pointless. Very hard grader. Boring material and he does not explain the major concepts well. You are pretty much on your own for the assignments, as there is no textbook. Exams are short but difficult. First exam average was a 56 and he did not curve it.

Ted's the man! One of the best professors I've ever had. He really knows his stuff when it comes to databases. While attendance is not mandatory, it really helps improve your quiz grades which are half of the grade. Assignments aren't too difficult, I spent 30 minutes on each.

This class - ICSI 102 - which teaches the basics of Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access) should be mandatory for ALL students. By far, the most practical and useful class I have taken at UAlbany, seriously. In the real world, everyone uses Microsoft Office, so knowing this program is more important than any abstract upper-level class.

Ted is the best professor I have ever had! Attendance is not mandatory, but don't expect a good grade if you don't go. The classes are hard. You can learn a lot from him if you pay attention. I would recommend him him for any class.

Ted is a cool guy, but probably the worst "teacher" I've ever known. There is no text. The notes contain no actual information and instead are just a series of examples. Ted provides NO CONTEXT at all for anything at all. If you want to learn, you'll be doing it alone. This isn't what we're paying for. Avoid this basket weaving faux-CS nonsense.

I took the database class from Ted in 1997 and it has been BY FAR the most useful class to me in my career as a librarian that I took while at library school. He put stuff in my head that I didn't realize until years later was in there. Highly recommend for those in the ISP program.

He likes to talk...ALOT. Granted, some of his stories are interesting....but not when you have to hear them one after another for 3 hours. He really does know his stuff though, and it's really real-life. But if you're stuck in "programmer mode" you're kinda screwed when it comes to thinking as a DBA

Knows his stuff, though a three hour class is a bit much and I usually can only stay put for one half or the other. Learned a lot of useful SQL, and things about relational databases in general. This stuff is useful for web programming with databases.

Very interesting course - however, I dont really consider this a comp course. It should be an ISP, however lots of "real life business comp" stuff being taught

Ted is the master of this database class. you can ask him anything and he'll know the answer or find you one within a day. HW is very straight forward and so are the tests. You MUST go to class if you expect to pass. I HIGHLY Recommend this class.

its too bad UAlbany cant hire more CSI professors like ted. he'll nail you on the midterm, but his HW is more than fair, and the final helps your grade. grading is 50%HW 50%Tests. hes very informative and lecture is unusually light. THANK YOU TED!

WOW!!! Without a doubt, the best professor at SUNY Albany. Most CSI professors at SUNY Albany should try to emulate the natural lecturing ability of Professor Borys. Retained much of what Prof has taught. Tremendous asset to SUNY's CSI dept and the world.
