Comment:

Our class had a very low average for the midterm and he did not care at all. He did not curve the grade even when majority failed. His midterm was tough on fill in the blanks and does not give enough points on maps though he tells you it is crucial to know it to pass. He is also tough on grading his broad topic papers. Makes it hard to pass

Comment:

He's a really nice guy. Unfortunately, he is little organized. Doesn't clearly stipulate which are the readings for the week so it is hard to keep track of. Gets frustrated when he asks questions that none of us could know the answer to so no one answers; he asks the wrong questions. Doesn't give enough time to write essays on the exam.

Comment:

The material, at first, was interesting and he knows his stuff. After a while, it gets boring and you understand you don't really need to go to class. The essays weren't all that easy, the topics were very broad but if you write well, you'll do fairly well. Overall, it's a fairly light course but it's made up for in tough grading.

Comment:

He was all over the place in his lectures, they were hard to follow and I don't feel like I learned that much. There were four things we got marked on - a midterm, an exam, and two essays. He set up the midterm okay, but the essays were unclear and he marked really hard. For the exams, I would recommend looking up terms to know online for more info

Terry is a great professor. You have two essays to write for this course but he gives good feedback so you can improve on the next one. His lectures were easy to follow and his exams were easy. Attendance is taken so make sure you go to class and make sure you take notes during class. He answers questions promptly, is accessible and is very nice.

I have had 2 courses with him. He's a insightful professor, and sounds intelligent. This course is most inspirational course I ever took in my life, it literally changed my view of life. This course provides powerful mindset for those whom seeking a career in modern China. However,high mark is hard to get, and viewer discretion is advised!

Even though his lectures are very informative interesting at times, if i had the option to leave his class I would've . There were no other written courses I could take. He seem to not comprehend that every one is not as informed as him in regards to the course content, he has very hard exams that includes material he forgets to teach. Easy essays

If u need this course for major,than good look;if you are Chinese, and think chinese history is easy,than u r wrong, not much history was taught in this course, most of the lectures talks about religious,dont take this course, dont take this course or u will regard

I truly enjoyed having Prof. Russell for this course, clear speaker, really knowledgeable (I suspect his grasp on Chinese is formidable given his pronounciation in class) and engaging. Two essays, that were graded by a marker, not Prof. Russell himself. He kindly looked at (and regraded!) my second essay when I went to talk to him. Recommended!!

Awesome professor! Easiest 2000 level course I've taken. Attendance is mandatory and he can be dry to listen to. Textbook wasn't helpful as assignments were from a website.

I took beginner mandarin with him and i really regretted it. he is nice but a little boring and a really hard maker. when every one gets good grades on the tests, he will be like oh filling the blanks is so easy, im gonna give you guys other things. people in my class get like C or C+ and its just an elective for them. cant believe it!

I liked his teaching style. He speaks very clearly and you can tell he's enthusiastic. Don't really need to buy the textbook. Go to class and make sure to take notes. 2 essays, 1 midterm (so easy!), 1 final. It was an easy A.

A good prof and very kind person. Make sure to take notes on what he says during class (he posts the powerpoints online later, but without any notes to supplement them they make little sense). Go to every class and pay attention and you'll do fine. Helpful and willing to help outside of class. I got an A, didn't open the textbook once.

I took two classes with professor Russel between 1992 & 1995 - the two best courses I ever took. I found him to be an excellent professor who takes an interest in students and is very helpful.
