I LOVE this man, but his class is pretty boring. He is very soft-spoken, which makes it very hard to pay attention. He is SO nice, though, and sometimes the cute old man things he says are BEYOND adorable. Rambly, though. Not sure what he's teaching sometimes.

Walter, and you must refer to him by his first name, is probably one of the sweetest professors at SUNY Geneseo. He grades his papers fairly but if you want an edge just greet him with a smile and a "Good Morning Walter." :)

for a 100-level class he graded too harshly. even after i met with him prior to a paper being due i wouldn't do as well as i liked. he's soft spoken/monotone which can be rough. he can be cute/funny sometimes though. two papers and a presentation- not terrible but not great.

I'm not sure what the level was, but I had Freed for American Lit. It was a super easy class that doesn't require too much reading and has few assignments including a fill in the blank midterm. Although the class is a bit boring, Freed is a genuinely sweet man and is super helpful during his office hours.

I've had him for two classes at Geneseo. He gives a fair amount of work but nothing overwhelming. I've heard he grades harshly, but I've found him to be an easy grader personally. He can be very boring because he straight lectures, but he cares about literature a lot, likes his students, and can be funny. Classes would benefit from discussion.

Talks far too softly- you cannot hear him unless you sit in the front row and even then you will miss what he says when someone rustles their jacket in the slightest. Class is boring. Teaching style can best be described as "rambling". Subject matter is spurious. Grading is suspect. Does not assign much work: 3 papers, 1 presentation, some quizzes.

I've had a few classes with him. He is nice and sometimes funny and clearly loves literature, but he may make you fall asleep. Not a very hard class. 3 papers, 5 quizzes, and a presentation.

The class itself is not difficult--I took it under Short Fiction. My problem is with Freed's teaching style... he does not try to engage the class at all. He simply talks about the reading for the day, and yes, sometimes his opinions are interesting, but he's practically asking us to fall asleep. Easy A, yes; interesting course, not at all!

Very soft spoken, so sometimes it's hard to hear him. Extremely passionate about what he his teaching. Can be very funny often times dispite his intimidating apperance. My only complaint is the lack of structure for his papers.

This class is horrible. He may be mellow and nice but as a teacher he's HORRIBLE. He doesn't care to know who anyone is and claims class participation is important when he rambles the entire time about things not even relevant to the reading. Worst class ever. Oh and guaranteed every day he keeps talking for 10 mins after class has ended.

He is very mellow while talking until he finds something that he thinks is important, then will he raise his voice and wave his cane in the air. Random quizzes about the stories that are to be read before coming to class. Also has a specific idea in his head for papers, if your idea isnt what he is looking for, you will have to rewrite your paper

This class was pretty easy as long as you actually go to class. He likes to have a random quiz once in a while. Definitley drink some coffee before class, he's a bore. Really nice guy. Pretty random outbursts of interest in stories which makes for a good laugh when you're about to fall asleep. Nice guy, boring though.

While Professor Freed can be a harsh grader when it comes to papers, his midterm and group presentation are both fair and easy. As long as you put time into the class, and make a genuine effort, you should do well. He is also extremely enthusiastic, kind, and funny at times. There are a lot of notes, but that doesn't take away from the class.

This is the best english teacher I've had here. He knows the material inside and out and teaches it with enthusiasm. He makes it interesting and uses his cane for demonstrations. The group presentation is easy as were his tests. Fill in the blank for a midterm? It doesn't get any better than that.

SOOO boring, difficult to stay awake. He rambles on the entire class like students aren't even there. IMPOSSIBLE to predict what will be on tests, questions are soo specific even though there is such a wide range of material! STAY AWAY!!!

At first glance, Freed may SEEM boring. If you LISTEN, however, he really ISN'T; He's just soft-spoken. He has such passion! I absolutely loved hearing him talk, whether it was explaining the stories or telling his own personal anecdotes. He is extremely smart, VERY VERY well-spoken, and responds kindly to every response. Got an A, somewhat easily.

I had Dr. Freed (Yes, he has a PhD, he's NOT JUST a "lecturer") for Eng 200 and he was such a delightful man I absolutely had to take his class again. I love his talks and he makes me feel all nostalgic when he talks about his life. Yes, occasionally you will be behind the syllabus, but his talks are absolutely worth it. I absolutely LOVE this man!

He's got a ton of interesting things to say and real life experiences to share. This short fiction class is great becuase you read one short story per class (maybe not even that) and you have two papers and one presentation. He's rather soft spoken but very intense about everything he does.

read everything on the syllabus! he may seem boring at first, but he is very interesting once you get into class a little bit. it is amazing how much he knows and how interested he is in the subject himself. take good notes and go to him if you need help on your paper. read everything on the syllabus no matter what he does in class.

HE is soo boring. He is unclear about the assignments, papers, and everything in general. HE doesn't give direction and specific advice, but gives bad grades. Overall, I would not rate this teacher very higly. He is a nice guy and is approachable, but as far as the topics and his insight...not very helpful.
