Great class for introduction to Mechanical Engineering. Very helpful if you ask questions but need to know what you are asking before talking to him. Group project is fun if you have a group that cares. Encourages creative thinking.

Dr. Helmer is a very nice professor. I had him for Intro. to Mechanical Engineering and it was a very easy A. The class involves a lot of group projects and writing reports over them, with only two tests, but everything is pretty straight forward. Also, for it being a 1 hour 50 minute class, he dismisses class extremely early(after 3 minutes once).

He is fine for Intro, but in heat transfer he isn't very good. He explains poorly, and sometimes understands poorly. He also thinks that it is alright to tell everyone there will be a pop quiz and then spend the first half of class explaining his views on marriage gender roles, as god defines them. I prefer to actually learn the subject.

Great man! Always has something insightful or helpful to say. Extremely helpful with projects and showed interest in his students' progress. Make sure you write an excellent research paper for all projects and he will take a liking to you. He likes students who put forth great effort. His speech on the last day of class is touching. Wonderful man!

If you've been in class with him for more than 2 weeks and you can't see his commitment and enthusiasm you're not paying attention. Not an easy course. Wants you to think. Came to meet me during time when he didn't have scheduled office hours. Great guy. I can learn HT at any engineering school but where can else can you get H^3 and L^3? Awesome!

He is an amazing teacher! He is so helpful and tries to make everything fun. You don't really do a lot of book work, mostly group projects. Make sure you find a good group to work with. Very easy to make an A in this class if you put forth even a little effort. LOVE this man. He is definatly the BEST.

I've had him for several classes. He's a great guy, but he can't teach worth a flip. If you take him for Statics, you'll most likely fail Mech of Mats, and if you have him for Thermo 1, you'll most likely fail Thermo 2. Why? Because you'll pass the class but you won't learn anything. Avoid taking him at all costs.

It was a fun and easy class, but a little too much. Most of the class activities was hands-on. He didn't teach much though. He didn't put much effort into explaining the concepts, so ideas were hard to grasp. I wish he did better. I think I might have trouble with later ENGR classes because of him.
