Comment:
Cole puts more time into class prep than your average professor at LC. He can teach to any level of intelligence/interest. He gets a bad rep for being egotistical or too heady but I'd bet folks pooh pooh him because he demands a lot of students, and doesn't put up with their BS. Take a class and you'll see why his fans like him so much.

Don't take Alan's class to learn anything about religion. Unfortunately there is no other option for east asian RELS profs. Yes, he's full of himself and occasionally incomprehensible, but think of him as a STYLE teacher rather than CONTENT. He taught me to write and not much else. If you take his class, be a filter, not a sponge.

Comment:
Cole is full of himself, and overconfidence can lead him to come across as intelligent. However, lectures tend to lack focus and be off topic. I learned nothing about actual Buddhism, but a lot about Cole's personal beliefs and opinions. Students often are impressed by him due to his demeanor; however, the content of his lectures is unimpressive.

Comment:
I took Buddhism from Professor Cole last spring. His lectures often drift from Buddhism to the philosophy of beauty, truth, existence, and the liberal arts worldview. I found these tangents enlightening and the most enjoyable part of a must take class. Professor Cole lucidly explains the complexity of Buddhism and the world we live in.

Comment:
Alan's brilliant. His classes are peppered with humorous and lucid anecdotes and he never lets you forget how each piece of information fits into the course's larger arc. He can be arrogant or callous or blunt, but he is also very wise, an astute reader of people, and brings out the best in his students. He's the best professor I've ever had.

I didn't get A's my papers either, but I don't think grades are everything (plus I got a B+ in the class, which is still a good grade). Also, he lets you rewrite papers for a better grade. Very thought-provoking class. Alan can seem arrogant, but he's really a cool guy, visit him during his office hours.

I would agree that Alan is a bit full of himself. He can be rather hard to follow, but can also be pretty interesting. Adds strange/funny analogies, like one from the missing turkey in his turkey sandwich to Buddhist sutras. ...as to another's comment, I can attest that Alan does give As. Don't nec. say what you think he wants, just argue well.

Incredibly random and unclear lecturer. I have no idea what an "A" means to him--but he never gives them. At times I re-wrote papers for him to recieve the same grade (I generally am told I am a good writer and get A's....). From my experience, people in his major tend to like his ideas, everyone else thinkgs hes awful...I really don't advise.

The material in this class is great, but beware of his tendency to be full of himself. He tends to see things only one way, and isn't afraid to say so, and I'm still not sure what an "A" paper is to him. I did learn quite a bit, though.

Comment:
Alan is definitely not for everyone--he forces you to think outside the box. If you're fine with that, then take a class from him. But be warned--his lectures are confusing, he's on a power trip, and even after writing four essays for him, I still don't know what he expects from his students.

If you can force your self to keep attention during his lectures you'll find your self thinking in new and great ways. A class for those with character(everyone) if they are willing to explore not just religion but themselves
