I used to hate professor Heard before this year. I was in his composition course last year and i thought he was extremely rude. But after being in his counterpoint class this year, i realize how intelligent he truly is and how much i have learned from him. He is really really blunt, but I appreciate the help he has given me in my compositions

H was a newbie on fac when I studied long ago. Held us to high intellectual standards at every stage in composition from the 'basic idea' to the 'finished product.' Very disciplined and expected us to be too, and, why not? Open to ideas from us, but expected us to recip and appreciate his response, which was, usually, right-on, much to our chagrin

Comment:

Professor Heard is actually the coolest person in the world. He's blunt, honest, and his questions get to the heart of the matter. This isn't just circling pcsets and slapping prefabricated formal structures onto canonic pieces. I've never felt like I've learned so much from a prof. They proved to be the most enriching undergraduate courses.

Though he has the least amount of tact for a prof who teaches, he is definitely a brilliant man who has enthusiasim for his area of expertise. Composition in university is all about exercises, learning, and trying new things foremost and THEN comes personal expression and beauty. Some people can't handle that realization.

he's not the nicest guy, and he doesn't react well if you don't understand things, but despite all the horrible things i've heard about him teaching composition, i have to admit his theory prowess is just what a third-year analysis course needs. i appreciate his straightforwardness for what it is. not recommended for 1st/2nd year courses.

Took from him a long time ago. Sad to see he is getting bashed on-line. You gotta respect he is a natch at all that renaissance stuff. He just makes it up as he goes. Not many have a gift like that. Work hard in his courses, he expects it. What do you think the man does after teaching? WORK!!!!

A brilliant pedagogue, but only if you are a bright and dedicated student. He has a world of experience and knowledge, but his curmudgeon-y appearance can scare students away. If you are willing to put in copious time and effort he will bend over backwards to help you succeed.

You have to take people for what they are. He was not a warm person and did not want to know his students on a personal level, but this didn't mean that he wasn't a good teacher. I learned a great deal from him and respected him a great deal.

He is technically a composer. By technically I mean his peices have been performed... once. I can't imagine anyone would willingly play his peices a second time. He must have a lot of dank shelves at home, because that's where his music belongs.
