Comment:
Every day of class is the same - she throws out hundreds of terms and phrases with very little context. Clearly knows a lot about her field, if you're deep into research on Roman History she could be a good choice. Very poor grading, nothing returned until very late in the semester.

I think she is a terrific teacher -- informative, animated, substantive and entertaining. Enormous reading load, but you're dealing with original sources, not later interpretations or syntheses. Biggest caveat: In my course, grades were VERY late in coming, so it was difficult to get a clear picture how I was doing.

Dr. Futrell knows Roman history really well, and is extremely enthusiastic about the gladiatorial arena. She assigns a few papers, but you won't get the grades back until the end of the semester, if at all. There is a lot of reading for the class, but most of it isn't used. She gives an extremely comprehensive study guide for the midterm and final!

She knows her stuff and gets really into lecture, especially on the gladiator material. Be prepared to read because you will be expected to know and use the readings on the papers and the tests.

Classics is my world, and the workload is completely acceptable, although a bit extreme. But, despite Futrell's interesting lectures, she is unprofessional. I didn't receive a single grade in the class until the last month of the semester. She is never clear about anything and you will never know what she wants because you will never get feedback.

Expert in field; terrible teacher. Class is info. dump, no context. Expectations on assignments, like grading are indecipherable. Needlessly long reading assignments; half the info. is unused. Girls seem to do better than guys. This is what happens when academics aren't required to have an education background as well. Skip this teacher.

Dr. Futrell isn't the easiest professor, but she certainly is one of the better ones. Her knowledge of Rome is astounding and she conveys it with a passion that grabbed my interest. I became a serious Roman history buff after taking this class. However, her exams are rather difficult and she assigns way too much reading...but still recommended.

It is impossible to fully grasp what she wants on the papers and she is seriously unclear about what you lose points for on exams. I would avoid this class

Great lectures, good use of visual primary sources. She has a very sophisticated understanding of Roman history...its not just a Roman history class, but a very good, very high level, lively interaction with ancient Rome. Highly recommended. Reading and exams are what you should expect. Its college.
