Prof Gow really shines when teaching graduate students the intricacies of high-level analysis and criticism. He is also a champion of (the increasingly elusive) jewish studies--his retirement will be a real loss!

The prof might seem a little unusual during the first class, but you'll enjoy how he's able to make classes a bit less monotonous. Yeah he assigns a lot of readings, but it's not so bad. I'll always remember our last class where he explained the intricate web between dvorak keyboards, Pfizer, mumble rap and couples counselling. 10/10 great prof.

So glad I took Andrew's class . Though I rated the class as only moderately difficult, that's because the work itself isn't hard if you're focused. However, he does expect you to work hard. He's super supportive of students who are parents and he definitely knows his subject. Very lucky to study with him.

Andrew Gow is brilliant! However I did think that the lecture were not organized very well. i was often confused on what exactly we were talking about. He is a fair marker and does give back feedback but expect long reading (2 50 pagers a week). The topics were interesting but he was not necessarily engaging. No powerpoints/video. Straight lecture.

Great prof but terrible readings. If you want to learn about the intersections of history, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology then Dr. Gow is the prof for you. However, if you prefer a more traditional approach to historical analysis then maybe take one of his lower level classes before one of his seminars. Overall though, it was a great class

Dr. Gow was an awesome prof! His lectures were very engaging and 90% of the readings were very interesting! Participation is worth 25%, so do the readings,go to EVERY class and talk a bit. He marks very fairly on the essays, and gives very picky but helpful feedback, great for a 1st year class. Take this class! It will change how you see the world!

I thought this was a course about the ocean, but it turned out to be a great course about colonial contact. Dr. Gow is a different cup of tea compared to the other historians at uofa. Read, write and think and you will do fine in his classes. Highly recommended. Slackers steer clear.

Good class to attend and listen and discuss in. Unclear as to what the topic is around and what he wants a person to get from the lectures. Lots and lots of reading. Unclear as to what is expected on tests and marking.

Encourages individual learning. You can write a thoughtful essay, or a short story for his assignments if you like. Just be prepared to think and read. If Post-modernism is not your thing then don't take the class. Gow is amazing for those who do.

TAKE NOTES AND ATTEND EVERY CLASS!IT'S CRUCIAL! If you are a first year student looking for a stress free gpa booster maybe wait a semester or 2 to take this class, it isn't difficult per se but there is zero hand holding and you'll be stressed out at the lack of guidance. But seriously YOU MUST GO TO EVERY CLASS AND WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING THEY SAY!

I agree that Gow is very knowledgeable in history and religion and it shows in his attitude! Fair grader and interesting topics. I didn't find him approachable at all since he continually cracks jokes at his students lack of knowledge. I enjoyed the group discussions but the groups needed more guidance since the topics were so complex.

Dr. Gow is a wonderful instructor. He is clear about his expectations, and does his best to make this class easy. Don't expect to just have to regurgitate information, you need to be able to think. If you think this class is hard, or can't do it, you should seriously reconsider attending University.

Academic masochism? The class is not difficult - you show up, pay attention, read the texts and discuss the topics in class. If you need more 'facts' or context for an issue do the research yourself OR talk to Gow, who is both entertaining and helpful. He expects students to think, not memorize, and to analyze, not just read.

I adore professor Gow, he has such a passion for what he does. If you ever get a chance to have a class with him I highly recommend it, he is interesting, funny, and sarcastic. He is always good for a laugh and is willing to answer questions from the students. He is one of my favorite professors and I hope to have him again over the next few years!
