The lectures are much more difficult to follow than the text and homework. He does not explain things at all, and his lectures basically consist of him reading his PowerPoint slides. Anything I've learned about chemistry I have had to teach myself. Great chemist, I'm sure.

He is a solid prof., very straight forward and likable. Lab(45% of Grade) is very tedious and time consuming! (cheggcheating to them, they check)! Exams are straight forward but are graded very hard. Tips, learn how to use the Ti-30Xa!!!(only allowed calc). Attention to detail is paramount, sig figs, error propagation, etc

He is the absolute worst when it comes to lecturing and making exams. I recommend that anyone who needs to take an intro chem class, take it with another professor. There are no resources outside of class and he rarely shows up for lectures. 0/10, way too overdone for a simple concept class.

He's not a bad teacher, but he does get sidetracked sometimes and tell pointless stories about how he is from Alabama and the likes. Show up to class and study. Don't be fooled by how easy the content is, a few hours of studying is still necessary. I think a lot of people forgot that..

I give Dr. Holder one star because this is the number of times he showed up to class.

Comment:
Lectures are pointless with Dr. Holder. They are more like story time, and can be very inappropriate. If you plan on passing his class it's best to just read the textbook. Many of his quiz answers on BB are wrong, and can be very misleading. If you respectfully call a bluff he will most certainly treat you poorly. Ask anyone in the chemistry dept.

He is a nice man but a mediocre teacher. At least once a week we would hear about how he met his wife and grew up in Alabama, if that was on the test I would have gotten a A in the class, but it wasn't--- I got a B. The concepts are not hard to understand but his test questions are worded strangley and they throw you off.

Even though a lot of people were failing.... i didnt find the class too bad... u should just read the chapters on your own, nad try to make sence of them... and if you need help, go to his office hours... even though his tests were kinda hard, his final exam was the easiest final i ever took... all the questions were from old tests...

He shouldn't be teaching the class anymore, his tests are way too hard for the class, and over half of the class is failing. He's just not a very good teacher at all.

Had him for Organic Chem 320 in the summer. Not a good teacher at all. Half the time, he was going off on tangents and not actually teaching what was in the chapter, and then gives very difficult tests. Had an axe to grind with medical students. Probably good reason he is no longer teaching the course.

He was never actually in class. His TA's did all the work, but it was pretty easy. Just go to the lab and follow the instructions in the lab manual. It was pretty much spoon fed.

Generally good teacher, does a good job of being perky at 7:40 am. Goes off on tangents about family and distracting analogies a bit too often, but still an effective teacher. Be sure to study hard.

OK, well, he was the lab prof, and he never came to one single lab after the first one (where he spent over an hour explaining the syllabus). He gave a really difficult final exam that had many things the TAs hadn't stressed to study. Dropped my grade to a B, and I lost my 4.0 to a 1 credit class.

I had Holder in '03. He's makes Gen. Chem as fun as it can be, especially at 7:40am. Lots of people complain but they don't apply themselves. He's a fabulous teacher, his tests are FAIR and even gives past exams to study. He doesn't have a teaching degree for nothing. =)
