She's a taskmaster. It's more work than you've ever had. And it was the semester from Hell. But I'd do it again! She made me who I am today. She prepares you. I had he 20 years ago. I'm rating her now because I realize how well and how much she taught me. Some districts still don't do what she taught in 1997. I'd write more if I could. She helps!

Do NOT take this class until she retires. If I had finished everything, it would have amounted to 18 pages in 3 days. You need a B- to pass, and all were getting a C's and usually F's. She told me to change my career during office hours. Also, for 2 weeks, she went to Peru on her own (not for work). Students held 12 hours of class with NO PROF.

Dr. Nerenz is technically good; I learned much from her that I am still using, 15 years later. However, she is the only educator in my 204 credits at EMU who told me, half way through student teaching, that I wouldn't be a good teacher and should find something else to do with kids. At the time, I felt destroyed. It took me years to recover.

I had Anne for methods 15 years ago. I remember the assignments seeming impossible and cried over many all-nighters while getting things done for the course. However after taking her course I felt prepared for anything in an interview and in my first year of teaching. I still think of her in my planning and am so thankful for the preparation.

Comment:
She assigns excessive homework, but what she assigns does not require much intellect. The homework itself is easy, but it is piled on so high and deep that doing it is like sweeping the Atlantic Ocean. Don't get sick in her class. She is not sympathetic to the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune".

Anne is nice in person, always tries to help the students. Her expectation is unrealistic though. She just has to remember her class is only 3 credit hours. Her assignments are like for 10 credit hours! She has an ideal image of how the teaching should be, but she is inflexible of accepting other ideas.

Comment:
Anne is set in her teaching method and inflexible on ideas that are not hers--she's almost political, to make a name for herself in the profession. I've been Language Chair and I can honestly say her methods are theoretical and not practical for the real classroom. She takes the fun out of teaching.

Has specific ways she believes FL should be taught. Her practices are theoretically sound, not practical. Makes you believe that if you follow her methodology students will love the L2 and will become proficient speakers. As an experienced teacher I can tell you that her ideas are not practical nor do they produce strong communicators.

Comment:
I believe her expectations are highly UNREALISTIC of what a true world language classroom is like. Students are used for her research purposes. The methodologies are not proven to be practical NOR effective in A REAL WORLD LANGUAGE classroom. The methods are based on far out methods that realistically aren't helpful.

If you're at all interested in becoming a language teacher then you NEED to take this class. I know that I'm going to be a better language teacher than most that are out there simply because I took this class. Yes, it's difficult, but if you want to be a great teacher then just suck it up and be greatful to have this wonderful learning opportunity.

Be prepared to work. I easily spent 25 hours a week on this class. Don't miss. Don't be late. Have all your work done. Only take this class if you know exactly why you want to be a language teacher because it's brutally hard. She's got specific ideas about how to teach language and you'll learn her way.

Comment:
Just brutal. Almost as hard as teaching! Requires 20-25 hours per week to do her assignments, and nobody earns better than 90%. However, you must have an 80% or better to pass the class and move on to student teaching, where she will be your observer. A nice, wise, and smart woman, but expects you to mirror her extreme seriousness and dedication.

She will determine if you become a teacher or not! You had better think like her, talk like her and well, do everything like her. This IS the most grueling class that you will ever take. If you can survive, then you can survive teaching for 30 or more years. Is this class worth all the tears, anger, and hard work? YES! But, it is frustrating!

This is a trial in your life that you will just have to accept. Take your 15 weeks one day at a time. Jump through the hoops, never argue, remain energetic and pleasant at all times and wear a postive smile.Does she want green? Make it green! It's an experience you'd rather forget, frankly and is not useful for truly talented teachers.Think Nike.

A LOT OF WORK!! This work may be helpful when you actually teach, however, she made st. teaching more stressful than it needed to be. However, she was there when I needed her and always stayed positive.

difficult but worth it. i learned almost everything that makes me a good teacher from her. agree w/ previous comment that she won't accept any teaching style other than hers. uggh. rude to those in class that don't teach Fr, Ger, or Span.

The absolute worst professor of my academic career. Unrealistic, unwilling to accept any teaching styles that remotely differ from her own. Would not have gone through language teaching at EMU if I knew what a complete nightmare she is.
