Wasn't sure what to expect from this class but now that the semester is over I can say that I'm glad I took this class. The discussions were interesting as well as the lectures and essay assignments. The only issue one may have with this professor is that he tends to be late about 20% of the time and cancels class about four times a semester.

We did not have any discussions on the first two weeks of class. He is really slow in grading the papers, no discussions at all, no interaction in our onlines class unless you email him. He is so picky on the assignments. If you just want to pass this class, then take it; but do not take his class if you want to learn from this course.

Prof Merritt was amazing. A little slow getting started in our online course but that was not his fault. We had a lot of written work but he graded in a sincere way to help you write better.

FOR ME this class was a CHALLENGE. Reading the text book is POINTLESS. The note taking from the lectures are what you have to pay attention to. Word-for-word jot everything he tells you because it will be on the test. He lets us use notes too which was great since he was a CHALLENGE, but his vast knowledge of African history is amazing.

I took his African Studies class with an Honors Contract, and it was very manageable. Unless you are not willing to do some reading and a little writing, then you should get an A. He's a great guy and is passionate about what he's teaching. Being interested in this subject will help you get a good grade, and everyone should be interested in it!

Slow grading papers and returning them, shows too many films and documentaries in class, clancels class sometimes, which is ok if you are already on campus, but sucks if you commuted to find out theres not class, if there was another professor teaching african history i would take someone else for variety of teaching styles, but so far hes the only

I have never taken a class where i would wake up in the morning and be excited to be there on a Saturday for 3 hours. I actually loved this class and suggest it to anyone who plans to take this class. it is very informative, and he breaks all the information down for you so you understand better. great class. a must take...dont sleep!

Atta Merritt is a very spiritual and wonderful professor. Even though his classes are challenging, for some reason you can't help but to learn something new on a class by class basis. I took his classes last year and I still feel the same way. Great Job! It's hard to find a professor who shows passion for what they do.
