Comment:
Professor Tuchman is extremely knowledgeable about the subjects that she discusses, and the lectures were very interesting. There were only 3 short response papers and a final paper, so each grade counts. The grading criteria are not very clear on them, but if you read the books, you can easily get a decent grade. Solid choice for an MHS course!

The good: good personality, cares about students, knows the material, gives good essay feedback, has interest in the material and loves when students discuss the material. The bad: would give unclear essay prompts and then modify them very close to the deadline, grading criteria was sometimes unclear. Overall, she was good. Would recommend for MHS.

Prof. Tuchman is one of the smartest people I've ever met. Her lectures are insightful, relevant, and direct. Participation is a big part of the grade, and she will make you work for good grades on papers (two short, one long). Can be quite nitpicky with sentence-level concerns, but gives detailed feedback. Her classes are worth the struggle.

Took this class because I am interested in nursing and women's empowerment. Did not miss out on either of these things! Prof Tuchman is such a genuine, open professor who truly cares about her students and their ability to absorb information that's important. So thankful for this life-changing class!

Professor Tuchman is a great professor. While this class didn't have lectures on a specific time period, she gave incredible essay advice. She was so helpful in developing a good research question and gave great feedback on the work. She was very particular on the essays, and it was a lot of work. I would take this class again.

This class is not an easy A, but it by far the most interest MHS class I've taken at Vanderbilt. You have to do the readings to participate and write the papers, but she goes over most of them in class. She's a hard grader, but is very helpful in office hours.

She rarely gives above a B grade on papers. She was nice but I didn't really like the class. You need to read the books for the papers. There are 4 papers and you MUST meet with the TA in order to write what they want (it's unclear on the prompt). If you need this for an MHS Core, it's not that bad.

Professor Tuchman is an awesome lecturer who clearly tells the engaging story of medical history. While I usually find history classes quite dry, she was engaging and creative in her class content. There is a lot of writing, but the papers are pretty easy and not research heavy. Definitely take this class/professor.

She's a very engaging teacher, but a hard grader. I liked the class enough to say that it was worth the hard grading though.

The TA's actually have to double check with her before giving out an A on anything. Apparently, to her, "History of Medicine" means whining about the treatment of women, minorities, and colored people. The text she uses is literally called "Major Problems in American Medical History." The class is full of girls who want to be doctors...

the class has tons of work, but has been one my favorite this semester. lots of outside speakers come in and are all very passionate. discussion among the studnets encouraged. there are options to drop papers, etc., and the grading is stringent-- especially on history topics. she knows her stuff

Although topics are interesting, class discussions are pretty bland with no direction, just jumping from topic to topic...also insane grader on paper, almost unfairly...take the class if you have to but be warned

Rough, final exam was surprisingly easy with a week's worth of studying. Tests are pretty acceptable, papers are graded harshly.
