Comment:
Professor Shearer has lots of valuable connections. His class is full of awesome guest speakers, from well-known professors to high-level government officials. Unlike other DWA classes, Professor Shearer's class is full of practical and useful knowledge about the REAL world. I highly recommend all DWA students to take at least one class from him.

Oxy has two kinds of Professors: Great Professors and horrible. Shearer is one of the best Professors on campus and has done so much for America to make it great, fair and just. Horrible Professors are ones like Dreier who hates America capitalism and wants us to live under the old Soviet Union. Thanks, Ambassador Shearer; how you helped me!

He's a great teacher. He is knowledgeable and also well-connected enough to provide excellent guest lecturers. You have to take the initiative to reach out to him if you're struggling, but once you do, he will make sure to help you.

Overall, I like Shearer, but he could be a much better teacher. He teaches whatever he wants to, which means he sometimes doesn't really have expertise in that field. The books he chooses are great. Don't take him for a traditional writing seminar, it won't prepare you for comps or teach you much about writing. You learn as much as you put in.

How lucky we are to have this great Professor. He is the man and Clinton's man as well. Wow, a call from Clinton in class! Are you kidding me. Clinton's advice: I should have listened to Derek more! Anyway, few students realize that his son died while he was teaching at Oxy. So sad. Much better than Peter Dreier! Go Dr. Shearer and heal.

If you want to pay 40,000 a year to watch Frontline in class, take Shearer. It's a shame, because he actually is a very interesting guy...loves to name drop. Only two papers a year (most likely graded by his assistant Adriana.)

Shearer has the credentials to be a great prof, but lacks the engagement. He's competent enough, but the thing is, he essentially acts too cool for school. He comes to class right as it is starting, answers his cell in class, and only assigns two assignments all semester (big term papers which can screw over your grade). But he's still interesting.

Great guy. Really interesting person to talk to as he's had some incredibly cool experiences. Expects his students to work hard even though he tells students he's an easy grader on the first day of class. For the (2) research papers...(there're always two) research your topic, get lots of sources, and especially do the all important critcal analysis

Avoid Shearer at all costs if you are in any way a critical thinker. Content in narrow white male perspective. Doesn't teach. Are we really paying 40k a year for BS like this?

Beware: name-dropper! "Lectures" were more discussions-- which would've been great if he'd given some background. Really geared toward people who already know about the subjects he's teaching. Likes to talk about his PAST days in the white hou

Yeah, well connected is right. Also very smart economist, but never lets on in class. Very much a discussion class; take as a supplement, not as a true 4-unit course. Nice guy and best visiting speakers on campus. Knows contemporary politics.

Take a this class if you love talking politics. Shearer class feels more like a political talk show than a college course - I loved it! Shearer is one of the best connected profs at Oxy and he is glad to help with a letter of rec or a phone call.

Shearer is a joke of a "professor." His teaching style consists of poping in a video, falling asleep, and conducting what amounts to a 10 minute press confrense where he gets to name drop. The fact that he hands out A's and takes calls in class

Name dropping and story telling about how great he was when working for Clinton is the best you will get out of this guy. He is overly arrogant and his teaching style consists of telling you that he knows best, since he worked for the president.
