He is very knowledgeable, though his surprise quizzes can be very difficult if you have not done the readings. If you have any interest in contemporary Classical music then his lectures are perfect for you. Helped me discover Phillip Glass and i will forever be grateful for that.

Comment:

Although his lectures may be a little dry, he was very knowledgeable about the material covered in the class and clearly seemed interested in what he was teaching. Make sure to take clear notes as he does not upload lecture slides online. Pop quizzes may be difficult if you dont keep up with the readings on canvas.

Artistic differences, let's say. If I put a lot of work into something and was proud of what I'd achieved artistically, I didn't do any better than if I just submitted crap to get the assignment done. I definitely learned in this course, but I didn't really learn what I wanted to and I left with absolutely no further interest in electronic music.

very knowledgeable, never went to get extra help cause his lectures are well taught. Explains clearly. Music is not my major, but I liked his class better than the classes in my major.

Prof. seems like a very nice guy however doesn't like to stray from the ppt. script which makes the 2 hour class long and uninspiring. He is a very knowledgeable guy and it would be more relevant to have some interaction with him however he is NOT approachable at all and seems intimidated by the class environment. Assignment structure is great!!

Comment:

Arne is passionate about music and it really shows in his lectures. He seems quite shy and is better at answering questions one on one instead of during class. It seems to throw him off a bit when asked mid lecture. Good class, not for a slacker though as there are many assignments. If you love or are interested in music, this class is great.

Attending class is pointless, as he does not take attendance and posts all lecture notes online. Doesn't elaborate on PPT slides, which are phrased awkwardly. Doesn't answer questions well. Difficult marker who doesn't give adequate reasoning for poor grades. Won't even know your name in a class of <30. Huge disappointment.

Prof was approachable and was open to questions outside of class. Lectures frequently rushed through due to amount of material. Does not require attendance(aware that most people use the notes he provides from when the course was distance)but will answer you with 'it was lecture' if you email covered questions. The class is easy and but a lot work. Assignments are hard because TA and Prof dont help. Labs are completely useless so is Prof and TA. Dont take this unless it is required.

The grading is very subjective. There is no practices for assignments so you never know what the grader is expecting.(there is a TA that helps grading) I think the course material can be more intersting if taught by a different person. I think he is hard to talk to or ask questions.

Worst prof i have had in SFU. Will not ever take a class with him again. Emailed him many times with questions but the answer is always the same. "I said it in class" or check online notes. In lecture he just reads the webct notes. Not very helpful and he is very cocky. Low attendance is for lecture because he cant teach.

Highly recommend taking one of Arne's classes,he responds very quickly to emails, always very pleasant and allows students to be creative. His assignments are fair, though his marking can be tough,i recommend having knowledge of music before taking the class. Also is open to criticism.
