You better buckle-up, reader, because i'm about to take you through the roller coaster that is Arnold Schmidt. I took his Intro to Creative Writing course so that I can pursue being an author, and it didn't meet my expectations, at all. Our assignments were awfully dull, and were non-thought provoking. I'm a Math major now, due to nothing adding up

I received an A. It's doable. But would I take Schmidt again? No. He's nice, but his instructions are vague and his lectures incoherent. We were ALL frustrated (more than 50% dropped). Group presentation, read/discuss 6-8 plays, watch/discuss 4-6 films, 2000 word mid-term (take home), group scene study, research paper, in-class essay final.

This class requires TONS of reading. Focus on the themes and literary movements. Blackboard postings are required each weekend. He lectures and wants discussions, but it can be hard to follow. He is insanely smart and available for you to get help with your paper. Not the easiest professor or class but totally doable.

don't Iike him. always cared about my ENGL classes but ever since taking brit with him, I really could care less for the class because he's boring, always unclear of his assignments, and vague at what he wants. He rambles on so it's hard to take notes. Doesn't give you a sense of direction of what he's looking for in midterms and finals as well.

Comment:
Every assignment he gives is unclear and he is very vague at what he wants. He rambles on and it's hard to follow through with his lectures making it hard to take notes. There's a ridiculous amount of reading when he only discusses 1-2 readings in class. There wasn't one time where I didn't have to force myself to go to class. Very boring too.

Arnold Schmidt is a fricking treasure trove of information and insight. Some people would like easy A's and don't care to engage with the material--those people shouldn't take class with Arnold! Ask questions, and speak up--and DO THE READING.

EXTREME workload for just a GE class. amt of work would not bother me, but he gives extremely little if ANY guidelines ON assignments. you have to hound him to get any info. irrelevant lectures and pointless assignments. rambles. monotone. excessive reading. class went from 60 students to 23. 1 mnth left & still not 1 grade given back to anyone

Extremely monotone. Don't try to take notes, he is unclear and rambles, you will not be able to understand your own notes. the course requires an intensive amount of reading followed by weekly posts on blackboard of at least 250 words. Two long essays and one oral presentations are required. He is unclear with what he wants.

Must read 2 boring books and participate in weekly discussions on blackboard. Attendance taken during every class. Have to do a group report and present, as well as 2,000 word research essay on topic. Take home essay midterm, live essay final. Answered all emails and was helpful. If you do the work you will get the grade. I have 3.8 GPA- got A

He is extremely disorganized. He LOST half the class' rough drafts! How are we supposed to trust a prof like that? I agree he's knowledgeable, and he's probably a nice guy outside of class, but his teaching style is horrible. His expectations of sophomore level students are far too high.

He has got to be one of my least favorite professors in the English department. His class overall is easy...because he doesn't do anything! Random power points, vague unclear paper topics and horrible finals..he asks you questions that aren't even relevant..don't take him!

I had him for British Literature and even though Schmidt knew what he was talking about, it was very hard to follow his lectures. He does want a lot of discussion to happen in class. Midterm and Final are the same format which arent bad. Focus on themes and what authors have in common and you should do fine. He was helpful with the paper.

This guy is ok. I didn't really care much for his teaching style, but he is a fair grader on his tests and on the final paper. I agree that he forced us into picking a paper topic too early in the semester. The class wasn't really difficult, and Schmidt is a nice enough guy.

I think Dr Schmidt is extremely fair. THe grades are based on discussion, two exams, a presentation and one paper. The exam is easy if you just do an outline and send it to him (he will let you know if you are on the right track) I got an A on it. Overall easy class!

His instructions are unclear. We just took a miderm that no one in class studied for properly because he was so unclear about what we would be tested on. Also the writing prompt on the test itself was unclear. Everyone interpreted it differently. Most people I've talked to know they bombed his miderm. He can't be bothered to give feedback on abstra

Is OBSESSED with the verb "to be": considers it weak and will mark down papers accordingly. Change the verb to something else, and suddenly it's wonderful. Other than that, very educated man in terms of film. His selections were, on the whole, good, thought-provoking films with much to be analyzed.
