Comment:
This course is not for the beginner Java programmer. Where you are supposed to get the exposure is beyond me. It is described as a Accelerated class. This is absurd. It is for someone who already has Java experience. The programming program is in need of change, but won't as long as this instructor is present.

I took the class spring 2011. It's taken several weeks to calm down. Barbara made me so mad. She expects students to spend all their waking time on programming. Her lectures are vague. She expects students to find everything on the internet instead of actually doing what she was hired to do: teach. I'll never take another class from her.

Ok, so I went into this course with a hatred for it. The class was focused differently than I expected and that was a good thing. Barbaras notes are fairly through and her tests are comprehensive. The class did tend to get off track easily and some instructions could have been clearer. Overall a good teacher if you can accomidate her style.

Finished last week. I have no doubt that she is s good programmer, but she leaves a lot to be desired as a teacher. I struggled in this class as did most. Outside class time was typically over 30 hours. Her lectures are cloudy. Take the class from anyone else if possible. Programming can be difficult but she made it unnecessarily hard.

Barbara Johnston (Java) and Ivonne Nelson (C++ 2) are not bad people, but both could improve as teachers. All I want is a quality education, and whoever is able to provide it is the teacher I'll want and recommend. Just because someone is nice is not a reason to take their class. If you take a class from either, have a back up plan if you drop.

JAVA 1. I've read all the comments. The range makes me curious and guarded. I personally don't find her helpful. If you have previous programming experience you'll do fine. The beginner will spend a great deal of study time. Find a better book, tutor something. Don't expect much from lecture. The school tutors are students who just had the class.?

If you previous experience with classes (OOP) you'll probably do ok. The book is good but she didn't follow it or use any part of it. Don't know why it was required. She assumes you know data types and variables. She starts right off with classes. Beware! Been awhile since attended school, want to take Java for fun - forget this class.

Didn't follow book at all. Don't know why it was suggested. Changes assignments mid stream, contradicts previous instructions, unclear expectations, doesn't provide solution examples - you just got it wrong, great teacher if you don't expect help, tough love teaching method - here's the assignment go it it done don't bother asking questions.

I took her for C++ II and JAVA. She's a great teacher and is a little more picky about grading and your programming technique. This is a good thing though, I personally prefer Steve, but Barbra is awesome as well! Her classes were a little hard for me because I was in a car crash, had my wisdom teeth pulled, and it was the Summer term so, yeah...

Good teacher. I can tell she would be better in her programming classes. She, and everyone else teaching 1020, didn?t know how or even what to teach in the class. So, the class was pretty much a waste. But, whatever.

Barabra is systematic in her approach to teaching. She has you learning coding on the computer and by writing code by hand. Fair in the amount of homework. Can be a little picky when grading. Takes of points on assigments when something in the code annoys her. I would rate her overall a good instuctor. No non-sense type person. I like that.

Best programming teacher I've had, from CP 278A - CP 260L. She's friendly and fun. She really teaches you and gives an appropriate amount of work. Students have 2 weeks for most Programs, and if you focus and work on them right away instead of slacking, more often you'll actually find yourself with a little time to relax in between assignments.

Strict teacher with high expectations but excellent. If you don't want to work, avoid her, but if you want to learn, she'll teach you. Teaches great and is very helpful, one of the best I've ever had. The very best I've had at TVI.

Very nice and good teacher. Strict in grading your programs and heavy work load but that is a good thing when it comes to learning software development. If you are looking for a career as a programmer this is a good teacher to take. Do not bring your cell phone to class unless you want to end up buying donuts for everyone!

Awesome teacher. Uses her own book which is bad for the price (about $80). But awesome teacher! If you really want to learn c++ take her.
