Barry's exuberant personality was always a welcome sight at the studio center in the months leading up to our thesis show. Barry is uncompromising in his expectations for his students. He is straightforward and has a sharp eye when critiquing work plus many insightful and entertaining anecdotes. 1010 great teacher.

Barry is one of the best!Barry doesn’t choose favorites based on aesthetic,but gravitates towards students who work hard regardless of style or medium.He goes out of his way to help students out.When he feels that your work isn’t his area of strength, he finds others who are helpful.He’s alife mentor you can always count on for an honest feedback.

The devotion Barry has to both his practice and his students is second to none. He sees to the of core things. His teaching methods provide the foundation for a strong work ethic, critical analysis and advocates development of a personal sensibility. He is a respected authority of the visual language and an unparalleled mentor. One of a kind!

Barry’s pedagogy within the academic studio setting thrive for hard work and meaning. I'd never felt him to be purely interested in either mimetic or abstract work, just quality work. His teaching methods prove to be more innovative in a heuristic sense... once found my class making master copies from upside-down blurry slides- very cool :D

I have a distinct memory of Barry enraged with the class due to the lack of work being produced. If you know Barry, anger is not a common emotion. It did establish for me a deep respect for the work ethic he attempts to instill in every student that steps into his classroom. If you can't do the work, don't waste his time.

Comment:

Barry is a very good teacher and an even better person. He advocates for his students harder than any teacher I've ever met. I think sometimes people mislabel his working harder for highly driven students as 'favoritism.' Barry is a rare breed in academia, someone who is knowledgeable and accomplished, yet caring and supportive. A great professor!!

I had Barry for Sophomore Painting and now as a critic for senior thesis. I always appreciate his frank, insightful comments and ability to point out both strengths and weaknesses in my work in a constructive way. I'm always excited to go back to work after crits and I have found him to be one of the most invested, caring professors at MICA.

Personally, my problem with the man is that he lets his personal aesthetic influence his treatment of his students. Bottom line he's a fine arts guy. He prefers representational drawing and abstraction, but not much in between. So if your work doesn't fall into either of those categories, don't expect him to even remember your name. I could go on..

Barry does not settle with being merely your professor. If you are dedicated and work hard, Barry will become a mentor who, despite his very busy schedule, is always happy to talk to you. Like all great teachers, he respects the students who really work. He is critical and supportive, and even after graduating, I still greatly value his advice.

Barry's insensitivity made me want to drop out of art school. i felt punished for transferring to mica and being confused about my direction. my art didn't fit into one neat category and he wanted nothing to do with me b/c of it. he didn't help me through it but scolded instead. i was very dedicated, just lost, and felt cast aside as a result.

great, valuable, individual crits, but loooong group ones. his favs are those who work hardest and have awesome work, its not arbitrary. you earn it, so stop whining and start painting. very helpful in finding a personal direction, and encouragement. he also knows a lot and is very friendly. i love barry!

If you do suck up he will give you an A. "Your work does have to be up to par though or at least look like you've worked at it. His comments during critiques were somewhat helpful and have helped me discover a direction for myself. Excited about drawing now. Somtimes his tangents get annoying, but are cute. hey gang, BN was my professor back in the ancient 80s. I believe that he has one of the best minds of any art professor i have ever encountered and i've run into plenty. his comments during critiques is usually on the mark and he will give you the guidence you need for success in the long term. he is very kind and intelligent. listen to him.
