I felt this course to be detrimental as Bodil really tries to impose her own design style upon her students. In my opinion, more of a décor or decorating class than an actual design class.

I was a student of Bodil's way back (before the degree program, when it was still Malaspina). She was amazing. After working in a related field, I was excited to come back and do the full degree program when VIU made it available. Bodil has supported me as a student twice now, and also in the field, as a designer.

At first I was intimidated by the mandatory perfect attendance, but soon I realized that Bodil is old-school that way. And also right. If I had missed a class, I would have a huge gap in my knowledge. She gives really helpful, constructive feedback. Bodil helped me to really grasp principles and also to establish a trademark design style.

Comment:

Bodil is the prof I attribute most to my success in my design career. She knows how to curb you from being caught up in your own personal style to learning to think about design from the perspective of what is marketable, stylish, and visually appealing. She was there for me through a tough spot and worked with me on a plan to accommodate my needs.

She has a very specific narrow style that she likes. If your design style doesn't match it (even if you follow the hand outs exactly) you will not get a high grade. Get on her good side and you will get good grades. Tip- don't show her anything too "high concept". Keep it simple and follow the assignment sheets- don't be creative.

Her Marking style makes no sense. You can never learn from assignment feedback and grow and do better on next one b/c you can never know what she wants. She is out of date in her knowledge and out of the loop with design styles and trends so marks poorly b/c she lacks understanding of new changes.

Her way of teaching and marking is so inflexible. Spends too much time on talking and none actually showing. She talks about how she wants assignments to be done but not enough teaching is done. I found it really hard to learn, ended up learning the course's outline elsewhere.
