Comment:
Taking AP Lang & Comp or Lit will guarantee you an A (or at least a good grade) in this class. The readings are very manageable and could be from 5-50 pages per assignment. She's pretty passionate about the subject and fun to listen to but sometimes gets boring. All the readings are posted online so you could easily do them in advance, too.

She had a lot of interest in the subject matter making lectures pretty interesting. Occasionally has bouts of maniacal laughter when she becomes excite with the subject matter. Some of her arguments made no sense at all and she often tried to make connections that weren't there.

She is all over the place when she lecture so bring a laptop, but she is very informative and basically gives you the argument for your essays if you listen closely. Her analysis of the text is very interesting. The class is only tough because she only allows the TAs to give few A's per section, so you are competing for the grade.

I really enjoyed this class; the teacher was approachable and enthusiastic about the subject. Everything we were tested on had been reiterated multiple times prior to the test dates; if I ever fell asleep it was due to tiredness and not boredom.

I hated the way she taught the class because is was all over the place! she made the subject matter quite boring. you're grade depends on your TA. there are two essay that are worth a lot of points. so get a lot of help with those( you should be familiar with the readings in order to do them).. good luck!

Your grade really depends on your TA. Get as much help for the essays as you can with them. Otherwise, the professor is okay and the tests (again) really depend on the TA grading it.

Lectures were BORING as previously stated. Books assigned tend to be toward her liking, ie WORLD OF FABLES-which she co-wrote. Assignments 2 Essays, 1 midterm and final with some identifications of terms and essay portion. I love fairy tales & fables but this class killed it for me. I recommend it for people who write well & enjoy analyzing.

Very knowledgeable of the subject but ramblings are so excessive you'd get lost each lecture.lots of extra outside research needed to understand exactly where she is coming from.dante, epicureanism, historical relevance what? her TAs grade essays doggone hard. prof is difficult for a GE class. not what i expected from other com5 testimonies

There is a reason that Brenda has won several teaching awards!!! She is absolutely fabulous. One of the best profs I have had at UCD. Read the books, participate in class, and you will learn a lot. Colonial and Postcolonial Literature is a very interesting topic! You will not be disappointed with this class :)

I had her while in Italy. She was really nice, and understanding of the fact we were abroad (once said she thought a guy missed class because he was hungover and didn't mark him down). The reading's a bit tough and have presentations. The test is graded easily. She had us all over for dinner one night. I think she's just teaching only abroad now

I didn't really like this class, although there were times where it was interesting. The teacher is nice but does talk about irrelevant things. The two essays were graded a little harshly, but the midterm wasn't that bad. I would recommend this class if you like to read and analyze.

Kind of rambled in lecture. Her ideas and points were interesting but not necessarily relevant. Students don't seem to attend or pay attention in lecture. Essays were pretty clear cut but TAs grade fairly harsh. Final focused on two most challenging and difficult to understand works from the course and very little support from TAs to prep.

Fun class! She completely loves teaching and is super nice. DHC section was fun with her too! You have to like reading and writing for the course but if you do it's pretty easy. TAs grade everything though, she only lectures.

Lectures were often a bore. It was hard trying to get myself to class everyday, because a lot of lectures just seemed to be going in different directions, &you often didn't care about lecture stuff when writing essays. I passed the midterm just based on good reading and discussion. But the final surprised me w/ ideas from lectures, and I got a D
