Comment:

Absolutely wonderful woman. An inspiration to anyone who cares about what she studies. She is very caring, and always gives great compliments. Also a dynamo in her field of study, she is one of the best resources for her field, and I'm so incredibly grateful to have taken any classes with her. She is now my adviser, and I'm incredibly lucky.

I found her lectures interesting and definitely worth going to. Class required very litttle outside work. She gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. A lot of the material seemed slightly redundant and rather obvious but I'd recommend the course nonetheless.

I thought she was great. She was a very clear lecturer and managed to the class involved even though it was a huge class. She talks a lot about various issues (women's rights, etc..) that I thought were definitely worth learning about.

Brookes was by far my favorite professor at UVM! She takes time to learn everyone's name and is really interested in having everyone do well. You should at least skim the text book, but you don't really have to read the novels (just spark notes) If you have to take soc 001 I would HIGHLY recommend Brookes!

Amazing teacher, amazing class, definitely take this class is you either really enjoy sociology, or just need to fulfil a requirement. Teacher doesn't give out homework, she will make you read 1 or 2 books, but the ones I read were really interesting. Even though we are about 180 in the class, she will try to remember everybody's name.

She's amazing! Her lectures are extremely interesting and she gives her own life examples. She brings her adorable dog to class too. Her tests are kinda confusing and really long but they are all multiple choice. I highly reccomend doing a discussion group, and GO TO HER POST-TEST REVIEW SESSIONS you will get 5 points added to your last test.

If you have to take Soc001, absolutely take it with Professor Cowan. She's so sweet, brings her dog to class, and is more than willing to answer questions/help students. I definitely recommend signing up for a discussion group as well as it really helps you learn the concepts and apply them. She's awesome!

I absolutely LOVE Professor Cowan. Soc 001 is so interesting.. she brings her adorable dog to class and learns everyone's name. She is the most helpful and approachable professor ever. She's so nice and wants to get to know her students. Take a class with her! It will be one of the best decisions you ever make!

If you are taking Soc 001 make sure you take it with Cowan. She is incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable in regards to sociology. She makes a point of learning everyone's name which is very impressive in a lecture of 200 students. It's easy to get by without lots of reading because she is a phenomenal lecturer. Make sure you do a discussion group.

Cowan is a great teacher. She is extremely clear about what she is talking about and really wants you to do well in her class. She sets you up to get an A and on the final if you get an A on both sections, even if you have failed everything else in the class, she will give you an A as your final grade. Take her class!

I met her at a CAS open house and she suggested I take her class. I'm so glad I did! This is my favorite class yet. She is very empathetic and makes the material interesting and useful. I'm thinking of becoming a Soc major now. Cowan is the best!!
