Milem is a very tough grader and assigns reading and writing for homework every class. He is critical also when grading papers. Class time is spent reviewing the previous night's homework and discussing. Overall, he is a nice and caring professor who truly is interested in what he is teaching.

The one thing to note about Milem is his grading. He's an amazing professor, thinks hard about students' questions, and is willing to held if you're confused. But he is a TOUGH grader. I worked for hours and hours on his papers to receive the grade I did. Make sure your writing and grasp of the material are completely flawless to get an A.

Like others have said, he's a great teacher, but is very particular about his A's. You'll learn a lot about whatever he teaches you, but you'll need to do some serious work to get an A. He's also a bit awkward, but not intolerable. Other than that, he's a pretty good teacher and is always willing to work with you if you need help. Would recommend.

Really good guy. Second class with him and still love his teaching style and humor. He's funny and witty. I have never had a test in a class with him; he only assigns a few essays. There is never a final exam. The essays are meant to make you think. He grades fairly and is conscious that we don't always do work all the the time.

Great professor! I'm a student that cares about getting an A but I got a B+ and I'm not mad about it. Giving a B+ for him is like an A. I would've much rather the A for my GPA but vis a vis. He's a great guy, willing to help and a great teacher, he makes sure you understand! Will definitely take one of his classes again!

He is so particular with his essays, that's what makes it hard. I care too much about getting A's, and I got a B+ in his class, so I regret taking the class with him. If you don't care as much about getting A's, then he's a great teacher. Just more work, and more difficult than I bargained for for a GE. He's very helpful in office hours though.

He's seriously the best. Only 4 papers for the entire semester, and easy 200 word responses for homework each class. He makes everything very understandable. A bit strict on attendance, but he gives you 4 unexcused absences so it's not too bad. I can be a slacker, so this class is definitely an easy A.

Best class I've taken in a long time. Absolutely wonderful. Easy GE, 4 papers and responses to readings for every class. But all you have to do is submit a response and you pretty much get credit. He's very funny and interesting, always keeping the class's attention. Take this class, you will in no way regret it!

Though decent compared to the other philosophy professors at New Paltz (let's not even go there), Milem is quite difficult. Expect about a month to receive feedback on a paper. And if you happen to disagree with his personal views on a subject (materialism), expect a very harsh grading indeed with little willingness to let you defend your position.

Milem is honestly amazing. HIs course work lines up with my life and he is inspiring because of this. He is funny and kind and is willing to help any student with any problem. You have to do the readings, but if you WANT to learn, take Milem's classes.

Teaches the material well. Really nice (though a bit corny) dude. Lots of reading/writing. The dude clearly cares about his class/students and puts a great deal of effort towards his work. Pretty picky grader, though. You'll be challenged.

ALthough there are no Tests or Quizzes, this is still a very annoying and boring class. I don't have anything against Professor Milem, however he makes the subject very boring, plus the material is a bit difficult. If you want to take this class as a GE, DONT TAKE IT.

AMAZING TEACHER. By far my favorite at New Paltz. Loves the subject matter. Articulates himself well and is unbiased. Does his best to get you interested if you're not already. He can be quite funny at some points. Definitely take his religions of the world class you won't regret it.

World religions: he taught it as if it was a philosophy class. There were no tests, only DAILY single page journals about the reading (which were graded) and 3 papers. For my interest level and the dry nature of the material, tests would've been better when learning about 7 religions. He does the best that he can, and he teaches in a novel way.

Professor Milem is very smart and interested in what he teaches. He changed the format for our class, we had no quizzes or tests, just three papers and sometimes a one page homework assignment about the reading. I didn't do the nightly readings and just looked through the book when it was time to write the papers and I was fine. An interesting GE.

One of the most fair and well rounded professors I have ever had. Doesn't necessarily hand out good grades but does everything that he can to ensure that you have a chance to do well. Tries his hardest to engage the class and get them involved. Great professor as far as teaching, personality, class policies, etc.

I've had Milem for two classes, and I think he does a very good job highlighting the material and provoking discussion. He is obviously very interested in philosophy which results in lectures that cover much ground. I always enjoy writing the papers in his class; he can grade somewhat difficultly but it makes you improve your ability over time.

The best professor! He articulates each and every concept crystal clear so that the entire class is engaged and thinking. He is a fair grader and open minded to rewrites. He give simple quizzes to make sure that you have done the reading, but grants students 4 misses. Extremely organized, silly/witty and intelligent. I loved this class!
