Basically, you would have to memorize all the notes to do well in this class. Other wise, you are doomed. Makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. Turns a fun class in to a miserable one. Do not recommend!

Very cold and unapproachable. Shoots down suggestions and will often tell students they are flat at wrong about things she doesn't even know about. Her tests do not test a students comprehension of a concept but test your ability to memorize the notes. You can fully understand a concept and forget one word and get the whole question wrong!!

I love biology and she makes me hate it with a burning passion. I've never missed a class and constantly print out my notes and study them hard and still do poorly in a subject that is usually so simple. She's cold, anal, and doesn't care about her students. She gives tricky tests and has an incredibly annoying voice. Don't take this class.

Well, this grad course is rather typical considering the department desparately needs an infusion of both cash and inspiration. Endangered Species was actually taught by the students. Each of us was given a chapter from an undergrad text and asked to present it to the class. For this reason, I demand a partial reimbursement for my tuition. Pitiful.

Although she writes notes on the board, the tests do not reflect anything lectured in class or in the assigned textbook readings. She does not like answering questions and is discouraging to the students who raise their hands. I wouldn't suggest taking this class.

She's a fine lecturer. She's undeniably passionate about what she does and that radiates in all of the lectures she gives. She also has a truly beautiful voice. So it's easy to listen to her every word. Simply put: She's great.

Class interesting BUT too much time was spent in saltmarsh. Great textbook, hardly got to use it because so much time was spent reading outdated, old papers about the Great Sippowisset salt marsh. Nice person, a little cold. More needs to be spent on local wetland issues. Tests were challenging takehome, take a week to complete, harsh picky grader.

Rietsma gives amazing notes, that is all you will need to study for tests. Dont even read the book. If you study hard there is no reason you cant get good grades. Goes fast during lectures and can be a bit monotone but once you know what she wants you can do really good.

She knows her stuff- very thorough. She's tricky, may say important notes and not write them down. I'm not a biology major, and I'm struggling in the class. Go to class everyday and take detailed notes- that's the key.

I like this class alot. Yes, its hard, and yes you need to study hard. She is very picky about grading tests, not really a people-person, and very anal, but once you figure out what she wants you can do very good.

She is very particular. Her tests are hard with no multiple choice only short answer. Labs are rough too if you take this class be prepared to be walking around in a foot of snow in the woods. If you don't want to put in a lot of effort then don't take this class.

If you actually take the time to talk to her, (like when you go out into the field) she will definitely respond in a positive way. She gets a bad rap for being a cold person but she is actually quite interesting to talk to.
