Brilliant teacher. Very long and demanding homeworks. Overall class was an incredible learning experience, and his book is probably the best on real analysis imo.

Comment:

The first unit (mv calculus, differential forms) will leave you flustered and confused. The proofs are gruesome and the notation is finicky. Measure theory was a lot more forgiving. If you persevere, you will find that you only need to internalize statements of the theorems and know basic proofs, although the homeworks are brutal. Make friends!

Pugh was easily one of the most clear, succinct, helpful professor I've had at Cal. Incredibly difficult homework, make friends with the GSI and go to OH. Overall, boardwork was neat though sometimes proofs got a little muddy. Watching him go at some of the more complicated concepts was great and very inspiring.

Just know how to do each type of problems and don't bother hoping something you've done will show up. His exams consist of moderate problems and insanely difficult problems. All I remember was getting scared at answering some of the T/F questions (you lose points if you get them wrong!)

This class was so hard I wanted to commit suicide during it, but that was only because I was doing insanely difficult problems and learning very difficult material. He runs a great class, but only take it if you are prepared to do tons of work.

I always sleep in class. He's sometimes funny, but the exams... oh man. Some people even had negative points! Those true/false are killers... don't answer them. I had taken AP Calculus BC with a 4, so this class should be easy, but I ended up with a C!

Pugh is somewhat deceptive. He assigns long, tough hw's (which provided good practice). Wrote an easy midterm and a horrendous final. I guess it's b/c he usually teaches H104. I liked his lectures though - good boardwork and effective speaking.
