Comment:
Yang essentially lectures out of the textbook, and I've come out of many a lecture more confused than when I went in. The homework problems are generally worded poorly, and the GSIs were very little help. The exams were unclear (the median on the second midterm was 51%, for example). At least the class is curved.

Lecture may be a bit dry, but he is very clear and logical. It's easy to apply examples from class to homework problems. Homework and exams were fair. If you really want to talk to someone about the material you really need to butter up your GSIs- one of mine was exceptional and made the whole class.

Comment:
Yang is a terrible lecturer. His English is very bad and his powerpoint presentations are even worse. All he does is scribble on a tablet computer and mumble things about chemistry to himself. Material is completely disorganized between use of two text books, powerpoint, and external sources. I hate Inorganic chemistry now

Reeeeaaaallly Bad. Terrible powerpoint lectures; doesn't explain everything you need to know and what he does explain, he does a terrible job doing. On the bright side, he is interesting to talk to during office hours.

Okay class. The exams were very reasonable because they appeared on hwk, and especially lecture. Teacher was nice. Lectures = nap time for a lot of people, but go anyway, because he will test the concepts, and just printing & looking at slides online won't help much. Read book before going to class so you can ask questions n follow along.

I guess the guy knew his stuff, but he can barely speak English, and I *love* that. I spent at least 3 days trying to figure out what a "poina grupe" was. I didn't like his lectures that much. A good TA will make this class much more bearable.

Knowledgeable professor, although can be difficult to understand at times. The optional discussion is where you'll learn how to do problems for hw's and exams.

Comment:
PY teaches with ppt slides, which is unfortunately necessary for inorganic classes. He doesn't go through many examples in class, but expects you to have a practicing knowledge of the material for exams. Tests are representative of things covered in lecture, and definitely try and attend the extra discussion section.

Comment:
Yang is often difficult to understand and his lectures are dry. The theory taught in this course is nearly useless now that we have computers that do better than we can with these methods. This has been the most boring chemistry class i've taken at Berkeley. The solid state material at the end is a little better than the rest of the class, though.

Interesting presentations. Uses Power Point Presentations that aren't much help if you don't attend lectures, but he explains the material well. Friendly to students who ask specific questions one-on-one.
