Comment:
I took Roth for both Math 314 and 315. He's a genuinely kind man who really cares for his students and will go an extra mile to explain a concept for you. Luckily for lazier students, Roth is known to be VERY fair with his exams. EVERYTHING is from his notes or his assignments. Rote memorization is 100% a legitimate strategy to get a good grade.

Professor Roth is a gem. He is funny and loves to teach math. Though he moves very quickly in his lectures, he is very patient and helpful in his office hours. Test questions are almost %100 from the homework or lectures. Make sure to take a class with this man before he retires!

Yes, his finals and midterms are pulled straight from the assignments, but once the course ends most people don't actually know how to do ad calc, they've just memorized all the solutions to questions. He's a terrible teacher, makes dozens of mistakes in his lectures many of which he does not correct. You're better or taking this class with Drury.

Gives a lot of physical insights to advance calculus, which may or may not be preferred depending on the person. This is hard to avoid as it's the major's version typically meaning it it more applied than the honours ad calc class. Personally, I found it extremely rewarding if you devote time to the class.

Comment:
Professor Roth has a deceiving reputation of being a very nice prof. While as a person Roth is great the same cannot be said about his ability to teach. He teaches ad calc to math majors using physics, disregarding the fact that many math majors haven't taken enough physics to understand anything that is being taught. Very set in his ways. 1/10.

Hard class, but if you do the assignments and try to understand the BVPs you can get a good grade. The first part of the course is confusing, but all the theory will be useful for the second part on PDEs.

My colleagues and I compared his grading and he literally grades you based on how much he likes you. He tries to cultivate a little club of students to up his ego as he has a major inferiority complex (I would too if I was a tenured prof with 2 publications total and do zero research). His teaching of math is shallow, if you're into that.

Professor Roth doesn't use myCourses nor does he have any recordings or notes. That fact coupled with his fast pace means its instrumental you show up. He will not spoon-feed you, you need to put in the effort or you will not do well. With that in mind, it's a very rewarding course with an inspirational teacher. MATH 150 is Calculus on steroids.

Absolute gem. Clearly cares about his students. Is subtly funny in class if you've had your coffee. The exams are pulled straight from the assignments, but are still pretty tough. Lectures will leave you asking "yeah, but so what?" for most things, so piecing all the content together is up to you. Buy and read the textbook and you'll be golden.

CR is a kind gentleman who indisputably has a passion for mathematics, he's a pleasant person to talk to and he devotes a lot of time to his class. That said, he is a bad professor. His writing is extremely messy, his grading criteria is not well defined, makes several errors in his corrections -midterm was off by 10 pts- & solutions are unclear.

Prof. Roth is a legend. You will alternate between love and hatred with extremes you never thought possible. I loved him so much I took BVP a second time... If there's anything you'll remember about McGill 30 years later, it's Roth and his coloured chalk. I will weep when he dies.

He's an absolute sweetheart and cares about students. Exams, although long, are fair and he covers all the material that goes into them. You have to be quick, but if you use your brain and have done the homework, the exams are not difficult. And he communicates enthusiasm about the subject: if anybody will make you love math, he will.

Super nice guy & clearly cares about his students. Horrible teacher to get though he teaches this class as if we're math majors so the language he uses and his methods of explaining go right over your head. Purposely excludes stuff from the course pack so you can't miss class. Midterms are easy but the finals are super long and hard. Hardest class

Really passionate about the material he's teaching and tries hard to make the students appreciate it as well. Very clear and well-organized during lectures, makes little to no mistakes and has beautiful handwriting. Lots of lengthy assignments but they're pretty much all you need to prepare for both the midterm and the final.

Roth is a LEGEND!!! He communicates so much enthusiasm for the material, and his lecture notes top any textbook so they're all you need. Assignments are by far the longest and most challenging of any class I've ever taken, but beauty is all exam qs are taken from assignments (which he posts solutions for) and in-class problems. MUST GO TO CLASS!!

Comment:
Roth thinks that all students should learn the most complicated theorems out of "respect for the mathematics" which works on paper but results in unnecessarily hard lectures and exams.
