In class he is okay however, going to see him in his office hours is impossible. If you do go to see him he gets real annoyed about it. All the good ratings are from people who have taken him in the easy 270 class. Higher up classes he is a jerk and has terrible instructions. God help you if you have to make his stupid dev board.

Very enthusiastic and one of the few teachers who's lectures actually give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. He jokes around sometimes but don't think that it means you can get away with being unprofessional, because he'll ream you for it. Difficult to find outside of class but he's legitimately busy.

Incredible professor. He jokes around a lot in lecture but he tends to relate it to the topic of the class and doesnt loose focus on what he is trying to teach. he is able to take a subject that can be rather dry and make it enjoyable for the students. HW is worth a lot of points in his classes so be sure to put a good amount of time into it.

Great lecturer, very interactive. Assigns a lot of homework. He is always in a rush outside of class and he is sometimes hard to catch in his office. It's not impossible by any means but you're usually not the only one there when you do get at him. When you do get a chance to talk to him he helps very much. Can have some tricky exam questions.

Dr.Coulston was phenomenal for this class. He does his best to ensure no man (or woman) falls behind. He's willing to take time to explain any concept in more detail yet still manages to keep the class moving forward. The homework is great help. If you do it honestly, you WILL understand the material. Overall: Exceptional instructor for CMPEN 271.

Excellent lecturer and extremely knowledgeable. Misses office hours frequently, but come on-he's also the department head of electrical, software, and computer engineering. He has crap to do.

Pretty much everyone loves him for 271; terrible for most other classes (including freshman seminar) from what I've heard. Classes are entertaining and he explains difficult material very well. However, don't even bother going to his office for any reason at all. (He gets a little cranky...) Get help from the engineering tutors instead.

He is easily the best lecturer I have had. However, he tended to brush me off when I went to his office hours. But overall, I definitely recommend him. He made me actually enjoy digital design.

Can be a real prick at times, but does answer your questions and try and help you before he tells you to get the hell out of his office. Lectures usually clarify the situation quite well, but he sucks at making his intentions clear in writing. Lecture usually lags behind the homework.

Spends 15 minutes of the class joking around and then has really hard multiple choice tests. Homework is graded harshley. Avoid at all costs he will fail you if you are borderline.
