Horrible Professor, clearly is not here for his students even when he shows himself as a professor that cares. He is not sure a lot of the times and he is always late to class. He is a nice guy that cares more about looking good and doesn't help his fellow students improve on any fundamentals skills. I highly not recommend you to take him.

He use to be an English teacher so he is very harsh on your papers, you will write a lot and read a lot. If you intend to use this class to get an easy A and not work hard, I would recommend to go look somewhere else. He talks a lot and he sometimes comes late to class. The upside is that he does plan nice school trips to museums and art galleries

I have Carlsmith now and I absolutely love him. He's engaged and his excitement about his subject is palpable. He's really open to questions & comments and appreciates when students chime in with something that they know about the subject. Overall great prof. He gives reading quizzes on the primary sources, easy 5 multiple choice quiz

This man has got to be the best teacher I have ever had. I have taken a number of courses with him, and have loved each one. He is charismatic and friendly. He cares about his students. He is a great adviser. Expect prompt and thorough responses to e-mails sent to him. You will not regret taking a course with Prof. Carlsmith!

One of the greatest teachers I have had. It is clear how much he loves history and teaching it, and it in turn makes students want to put in the effort to succeed. Going to class, reading the texts, participating in class and studying for the tests are a must but it is well worth it.

If you don't read up on material, you will fail. Show up. Do extra credit. Anything to save your grade. The material is conveyed well. I just didn't pay attention and forgot to read a couple of times and that lowered my grade. you can use weisner and probably get by without theother book

Great professor and an interesting class! Prof. Carlsmith keeps the class engaged. Tests and quizzes are fair. You will need to do the reading if you want to do well. You will need the primary source book, but you can do without the other text.

Hidden gem at UML. Has his own website which was helpful. Passionate & extremely helpful. I loathe history and he made me enjoy learning it. Quizzes are easy if you read. Midterm is in class or take home (he is a fair grader, even letting you redo it if need be) I HIGHLY recommend him!!! Awesome awesome awesome professor.

The absolute best teacher I've ever had! He is funny, dresses up as characters, gets to know you and remembers your name. Tests are a bit hard, but if you review the notes you should be fine. Gives you the option of taking a midterm test or writing an essay instead. Overall I enjoyed the class and would absolutely take him again!

such a boring class and the material is so boring so it is hard to pay attention. I would recommend taking a different gen ed unless you LOVE history. He is a bit of a hard grader and his tests seem to be a bit difficult too!

One of the most interesting professors I've ever taken. Expects students to engage in discussions and be up to date on material. Tough grader but a fair. Gives options of writing an essay or taking written test for exams which is nice. Would recommend only if you are willing to put in the time in but for an easy gen. ed. I'd recommend someone else.
