Dr. Pierson is by far the best professor I have had at UML. Brilliant when it comes to the Civil War he is generally concerned about students, always asking first year students how things are. Lectures are filled with information. He does give pop quizzes and a rather long midterm but I would suggest any history major to take his Civil War course.

I've taken Michael Pierson three times now, and he's never disappointed. There is a lot of reading, but in-class discussion is interesting, captivating even. He always has great insight on the topic but lets students lead the discussion and your opinion matters. Easily one of the best professors I've had at any level for any major. 100% Recommended

Professor Pierson is an excellent lecturer and teacher this is my third class with him and he still remains consistent. His class is all discussion based so it gives you an easy opportunity to talk and that counts as your participation. I would consider him one of the best if not the best history professor at UML. I recommend his class 100%!

I have been inspired by Pierson a great deal and he is helping me achieve a deal in my academic career. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARENT HIST MAJOR, he'll do everything to help you, but take another 300 lvl if you need one!!!

Tons of reading, and you really need to do it all. Upwards of 200+pgs a week depending. Pop quizzes can happen on any day that a reading is due, which is everyday, so attendance is important. No reviewsheet for midterm or final. Great teacher and you will learn a lot, but pick another professor if you are not a history major just fulfilling a req.

Super nice guy. Has a very 'quirky' sense of humor (which I loved) and takes a great amount of interest in the topics he teaches. He is very passionate about women's history and feminism, which was another plus for me as a gender studies minor taking his class. He is always civil in his discussion manner. I highly recommend his classes.

The best professor at UML, by far. Classes are document and discussion based, no real lecturing. He is the sweetest man, and always willing to lend an ear if you're having trouble with anything. He is hysterical, uses teachable moments wonderfully, and is the kindest and smartest individual I have met.

Dr. Pierson is awesome! Every history major, whether your interested in US or not, owes it to themselves to take one of his classes, if only to push the bounds of what you think you know about 19th century US history.

I have had him 3 times. He is the best prof I've had at UML. He isnt easy by any means but a great teacher and he can make even dry topics interesting. Expect a lot of reading and class discussion. If you are a history major you owe it to yourself to take him. Non history majors may be overwhelmed at first but he a great guy and understanding.
