Hard grader. Plays favorites. Somewhat helpful outside of class but you will leave his office hours feeling less intelligent. Not Fordhams finest.

He's a good professor and he has broad knowledge. I only recommend taking him to those of you who wouldn't mind sacrificing a good grade for better writing skills.

I would not recommend taking this class. Prof. Hartley is a harsh grader who pretty much makes you feel stupid when you go to him for help. The grade you get on your first paper will most likely be your final grade. He is extremely sarcastic and his jokes are not funny. His office hours are inconvenient and he uses his intelligence to insult yo

Hartley was my most helpful professor this semester. I'm not an awesome writer but i still managed to get some A's on papers because I listened to his advice. He's really not that hard of a grader and he made class really interesting and entertaining. I'd definitely recommend it to everyone!

He seems like a nice guy, but his comments on essays are really condescending. He also doesn't explain what he wants you to do, but tells you to do it. He is my least favorite professor this semester.

He's a nice guy but he's a really hard grader. I rewrote an essay 7 times with his revisions and still only managed a B+ on the essay. His class is interesting but it's basically impossible to get an A.

Close Reading/Critical Writing: Don't know what my grade is yet, but this was a really good class. The discussions were interesting, and so were the essay topics. He's kind of a hard grader, but talks to you about your own writing issues in every class. He's really helpful about essay structure.

you might think you have a chance to get a good grade after your first essay, but you will soon realize that he basically tells you that everything you write sucks, he just says it in a nice way.

Why is Hartley getting a bad rep? Currently my favorite pro at Fordham... I like the reading material, its short and easy. Plus the papers aren't too difficult. If he sees improvement from the begining of the semester he'll give you a good grade. Take him

I don't understand why people are saying he's such a tough grader. Yeah, you have to put some time into your essays, but as long as you're making an effort and are a decent writer, B's are very obtainable and A's are also possible. You have to keep up with the reading, but the selections he gives aren't bad. Good class overall, nice to look at too.

Tough grader. Expect C's. Mildly funny, but tries too hard. Great guy to have a drink with, but not to get a good grade. Lots of work required for essays (4), but not a bad class. If you can push through the difficulty, you'll be a better writer by 200%. He's not hot. And he's Butters from SP's dad.

While Prof. Hartley certainly is a very tough grader, teacher, but I learned more from him about writing than I have learned from any teacher thus far. Gave insightful pointers and picked great books. If you're struggling, go visit him!!

Prof. Hartley is a great guy. His class is really interesting and the stories are usually pretty good. He's a picky grader, but is also SO helpful during the writing process for each paper. His essays and tests are fair and straightforward. The class is hard work, but my writing really improved, so it was worth it.

Hartley's definitely a tough grader and you really need to work hard in this course. I'm getting a C, and its frustrating, but he really does want you to do well. He's a really interesting guy though and makes class enjoyable. Good looking too so that helps me pay attention.

For starters, Chris Hartley isn't stupid. He's extremely erudite and knows what is good writing and bad writing. He grades like a good English professor should; that is, he is honest. If your writing sucks, he'll tell you. a B or even a C+ is a respectable grade in this class.

He teaches and grades like all of his students are senior English majors. This is his major problem, he doesn't realize that he is teaching a core class. He thinks everyones writing is terrible and in a class of 20 or so people, no one got higher than a C+ on the first paper. If you want your GPA to go up DROP HIM NOW!!

if you improve on your writing, you still get the SAME grade. if you do worse, your grade goes down. basically there is no way to get a better grade than you initially got on the first essay. the things you read are SO boring and the research paper topic is not interesting. i did well, but i still hated the guy.
