There's nothing bad to say about Professor Emerson. She is one of the only professors at UMW I can say I've enjoyed taking a class with. She's incredibly down to earth, friendly, and more than approachable. Try and take as many classes with her as you can.

For those who say Emerson is into herself and only wants you to write like her, you are narrow minded. Emerson wants you to write like you ONLY BETTER. I learner more from her in this class then any other creative writing professor at UMW.

Definitly could tell which students' writing she most admired by the levels of praise and attention she heaped on them, but everyone was respected and treated fairly. Very helpful and has a great eye for finding what works or doesn't on the written page. Offers great advice and instills confidence. Truely wants all her students to succeed.

I really wasn't a fan of Emerson or this class. She and I didn't mesh well. She struck me as very arrogant and narrow-minded about what makes "good" poetry. If you don't write like her, then your poetry isn't "good contemporary" poetry. I basically just pandered to her all semester. If you do that, you'll do fine in the class.

I have Emerson for Senior Seminar in Creative Writing-Poetry.I love her.When I hit the comments a couple of jerks left,I was completely shocked!None of those things apply to her at all!She is intelligent,incredibly talented,and generous!I think I suck at poetry, but she has made me feel like I wasn't a reject.I HIGHLY recommend ANY of her classes!

First day of class, she decided to kick out 17 students because they weren't "qualified to be in the class," although they were according to banner. Then she only allowed 6 of her favorites to stay, although 2 weren'y "qualified." This obviously screwed all 17 of us over. She's a total **** who thinks she can do whatever she wants. Have fun.

first and foremost emerson is a beautiful person. being in her class is incredible just for the chance to experience her reality. meanwhile, she is dedicated and caring and tries to bring out the best in all her students. atmosphere is certainly laid back except she really hates when people who are late or skip so only take this class if you care.

Professor Emerson is a goddess. She really knows her stuff about teaching creative writing. The problem is being unable to teach creativity. Her solution is to foster it with activities with guidelines to make you stretch and exercise your imagination.

I wish I had not taken this course. Emerson is, as others have written, very pleased withherself and her own work. Her poetry is boring, and her books are all the same. I found it difficult to learn from a one-trick pony who considers Southern Gothic the only acceptable writing style. She chooses favorite students and her choices are obvious.

Way too into herself. She refused to pass me after I missed classes due to things out of my control such as going to the hospital. I did great in the class but had to withdrawl because she was going to fail me. The class is way too easy, but pray she doesn't randomly hate you.

Every potential poet MUST take this class. Dr. Emerson will really help you. Her assignments are meant to be fun, and a challenge, not a burden. Every student has a say in class, and the workshop format gives you a lot of feedback about your work. She will take the time to conference with you.
