If you are looking for a History class that is interesting, educating, and enjoyable, I suggest you look for one not taught by this professor. He has an unrealistic amount of reading and the questions he asks are very ambiguous and hard to understand. The coursework is tough and he is an even tougher grader. I suggest you look elsewhere.

Constantine Vaporis is passionate and knowledgeable about Japan's language and culture and other parts of Asia. He's a great teacher, outside of a 100 lv class. He will assign a ridiculous amount of work for a entry level class you need. This isn't an easy A - it's an easy C and may cause you to balk or rethink your major.

Up to 350 pages of reading (worthless) and +15 hours of film a week . Prof. is less than clear about what he expects in tests and assignments (his instructions often don't match his expectations). He is rude over email, if he even responds, and exudes self-importance. He is extremely subjective, and it shows in his questions. I do not recommend.

Great professor! He was very helpful & clear. He loved the subject & I knew nothing about Japan prior. Reading was required, but I did none of it & got a B in the class. Document IDs on the midterm, but you go over most of those in class. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but it is helpful to go. Final was in the usual format of IDs & essays.

Absurdly difficult for a 100 level class. You HAVE to do the reading and you WILL read 2 or 3 books cover-to-cover before the end of the semester. Difficult grader. If you are only casually interested in Asian history and are only seeking to satisfy a degree requirement, avoid at all costs. Most students get Cs and work thier asses of earning them.

Tough, but fair grader. Teaches class in lecture style. Makes you work for your grade and I very much like that. Must Read Texts To Pass!! Very Helpful and gives extra credit. If you have a question he will know the answer. Also, do not b.s. in your Term paper, he sees right through it and it will cost you severely. It's college, Show him Respect.

If you're not a history major stay away from this guy. This was the least enjoyable history course that I have ever taken. He teaches in seminar fashion in a very dry tone. Lots of reading required which is ok but he expects you to read 200 pages a week and to absorb all of the info immediately.

I definitely did not enjoy his class. Way too much reading for a low level culture class, and his lectures don't help at all. He speaks in a very boring tone that makes you zone out easily. Hard grader on essays and tests - doesn't really give partial credit and only curved one test. Find another professor if you can

Reading load was a bit much for a entry level class.Exams were not too hard, he gave helpful study guides. the major pitfall of this class is the essay that requires you to read 40 pages on art analysis and find a way to get to a meuseum in baltimore. it can't be done earlier in the semester due to not having enough knowlegde.

Writing prompt and participation both worth 25%, midterm worth 120 points (25%), 7-8 pages comparative book review worth 80 points (20%), and final worth 120 points (30%). midterm or final included 5 identifications, one primary source interpretation, and one essay. Identifications (50 points), primary source (20 points), and essay (50 points)

Knows a lot about Japan. Lots of reading, random writing prompt. Hesitant when lecture sometimes paused a little bit long during lecture to see if students had comments or questions sometimes just a loss for words. Used a lot of visual iamges from travel to japan as an illustrative technique in lecture.

Very interested and enthusiastic about East Asian Civ, if a bit dry when lecturing. Writing assignments were not too difficult, though the reading load was perhaps a bit much for a 100-level class.

Definitely one of my favourite professors. Paying attention during class discussions is extremely helpful as well as reading the assigned readings. Doing journal entries is very helpful in maintaining good grades. The final exam was take home. You can tell that he really knows what he's talking about and feels passionately about the subject :).

Wonderful! He is doing his job... too many students give him grief for making them actually work. Professors like this increase the standing of the university. If you don't want to work, get out of school!

Great Professor. I don't know why everyone screams about the difficulty of his tests. I got a 108 on the first one. Just do the read and take good notes. Not the most exiciting speaker, but has a hard job covering 10,000 years of history in one semester.

This class takes a lot of work for a 100 level class. Vaporis is a nice enough man, but he lectures in a very monotone voice that puts one to sleep. The curve at the beginning tends to be generous but realize that for every test you need to work that much harder to beat the next curve. The few writing assignments he gives are easy.

Very dry, somewhat intimidating. Prescribes busywork, even in upper-level classes. His only redeeming feature is his name, which is awesome ("Constantine Vaporis"?!).

Took his accelerated class over the summer and found it very challenging yet informative. got alot out of the four weeks. Very approachable and really knew his East Asian history. Test are very difficult. Ended up getting a "B" in the class. Alot of reading but if you are a history major the reading only increases as you take more upper level class
