The lectures were so dull for 80 minutes and well more than half of the class was not paying attention and most everyone leaves. You rely on the discussion and your TAs, since they grade your papers. Your grade 10% participation, two 30% papers, and a 30% in-class written final (Three short essays).

most boring professor I've ever had. lectures are pointless and not mandatory. TAs are useless. avoid if possible.

Great class. Really walks you through what to write in the essay. Metaphysics is tough to wrap your mind around but even if you don't quite understand the topic and just take notes, it's impossible to get a low grade. Really liked the TA Kyle Banick (?) too, he's a lot more concise and clear than the prof.

Prof. Smith is a talented lecturer because even though metaphysics is a hard topic and can get a bit abstract, he always used references or examples that were easy to grasp. also, his exams and essays were fair, and if you studied and actually put the time in both you will receive an A. He is also super down to earth if you need help with something

He goes off topic a lot and it's hard to follow. It took me until about week 8 before I really understood anything and that was because I talked to my TA. I was often bored and distracted in class because I was confused but attendance was taken so I had to go. Readings are a must because they are the core of the course.

He constantly gets distracted from his lecture and continuously comments on people's questions... He mumbles and wanders off a lot

I have to say, after three classes with Smith, he is a genius! Seriously, if you are ready for a mind trip, take a higher level class with him. Also, phil 1 students: If you think Smith is not challenging enough, just remember you're in PHIL 1, an introductory class!

Smith is the best. Great metaphysics class. I did some of my best UCI work in that class. (Great TAs: Bullio and Lay.) I really got hooked into Phenomenology stuff cuz of this class. Study for the T/F midterm and see how well you can score.

David is a funny profesor. He is willing to talk about references to philosophy in pop culture to keep things interesting. I hear he has students watch Blade Runner in some lower div. classes. His lectures can be vague if you aren't paying close attention but if you ask a question he is engaging and brings you back on track.

Hes a very intelligent, humorous speaker. If you like philosophy take him... if youre just taking philosophy for breadth (all you phil 1 raters) then you probably wont like any philosophy teacher no matter who you take. Hes very easy to talk to and he makes alot of jokes throughout his lectures. talk to your TA. theyre the ones grading you anyway.

He has the voice of a philosopher and knows his stuff, but its not like its a concert when hes up there. I basically bailed half way through and just went to discussions. Essays and final were cake... should have taken it for a grade rather than p/np...

Class was fairly easy. TAs are easy graders, just 3 short essays and a final essay. Lectures are boring though and pointless. Just do your assigned reading and pay attention to your TA and you'll do fine.

This was my first philosophy class and I absolutely hated it! worst class in my life. Lectures are boring and he talks about the same thing over and over, yet it feels like nothings changed. Discussion leader sucked, never knew what was expected in the essays.I wouldnt suggest as a first phil. class
