Professor Hurst is a very helpful professor, and really pushed me to etch out an A in the class. I did encounter some issues at the onset, since I had to mold to his grading criteria. But really (as should be expected), if you respect him and give an effort to succeed, Professor Hurst is always more than happy to help and go over what you need.

He grades way to hard, he talks about things that do not pertain to class, and he is not very helpful. I did not enjoy this class at all. He's funny and can keep me entertained. I use to be excellent in english until this year.

Dr. Hurst is seriously one of my favorite teachers here at CCC. He's passionate about English and it translates into his class teaching. Unfortunately, many people complain because they think he's talking over their heads, to which I say, the problem isn't with him, it's with you. Read a book for once and learn a proper vocabulary.

Dr. Hurst gets a bad rap because he grades hard on papers. He's also up-front about his expectations, so expect to work hard if you want an A. I found his class highly entertaining and would take class from him again if I have the chance.

I tutored kids taking his freshman classes and could understand why they were frustrated (disorganization, rambling, overtime). However, his upper classes make you think -A LOT! His love for God becomes apart of his talks without him forcing it in. BEST & HARDEST final ever =15 pg. in-class essay on 11 Shakespeare plays. Great feeling at end!

I had this professor for American Lit. 1 during a summer session. The class was very difficult, due to the time constraints. But the professor was excellent. The best English professor at CCC, in my opinion.

Dr. Hurst is not hard, but he is not necessarily easy. His insights are somewhat helpful, but does ramble in class. He is known for making outrageous gestures and noises to keep his students awake. For example, he will bark like a dog, or blow a whistle.

Very unorganized curriculum, even A students tend to get C's in his class. Grades way to strict on papers. Tests are easy. Very boring and not an understanding teacher.

Absolutely splendid! Of any professor ever, his mind made the most sense-his command of language, ideas, and humor are astounding. His love for Jesus and hatred of Nietzsche saved my soul.

I appreciate his teaching much more now than I did when I was at CCC. As a highschool English teacher attending graduate school, lightbulbs flash on and I finally get something I never got before as I watched his heroics in class. I wish I could retake one of his classes.

It's been said already but I'll repeat another's sentiment...Dr. Hurst is the man! He will stretch your thinking more than anyone ever will if you are willing to take him seriously. His command of textual exegesis is phenomenal! His prayers are an inobtrusive look at how he thinks about the kindgom of God. He's a great man and a great mentor!

Very enthusiastic person, very bad teacher. Has a strong handle on his subject matter but lacks the ability to communicate it. Furthermore, has an unyielding and closed mindset: will not accept alternative views or interpretations contrary to his own. The English department would be better served if his wife taught his classes (she's excellent).

He's a great guy but he doesn't really teach and then he expects college level work. I may just not be smart enough to teach myself but this is more than confusing.

He was a smart teacher and abounding with knowledge. He expected alot, took his job seriously and made us in turn take his class seriously as well. His prayers at the beginning of class we full of wisdom and long quotes, I accidentally a few times almost fell asleep standing up while he was praying. But he was a good prof. He should almost be teaching master's courses instead but the school defenitely is making their academic level higher with him.

when the 2 class average on a test is barely passing, that should say something about a teacher's ability to teach or write a test, and that's what happened when I took his class. the lectures were hard to follow and the tests were very hard, and I did work hard in this class. the paper guidelines weren't clear so it was hard to know what he wanted

Very tough. He's probably the most intelligent man you'll ever meet, but this definitely creates a problem for teaching ability. He tends to talk way over people's heads, but with hard work you CAN get a good grade in the class...if you care to. He's someone you'll like more after the class is over.

I had Dr. Hurst at BJU for English Seminar and felt I learned a lot in the seminar approach. He was good but did not offer much direction at first. The class solidified later. Dizzying intellect. I also enjoyed his wife's classes. Very interesting, warm and friendly. Sad she's nt teaching at c

Can't commmunicate with students who are not 24/7 into literature. Should only be teaching English majors, not others. HE Needs to be organized and not ramble on -it is confusing to students.
