Comment:
SOCI 210 is supposed to be about Canadian social structures and for the first half of the term it is (although nothing I didn't learn in gr. 9 history class). But then the rest of the term is about organic food and farms and it's just an excuse for the hippie Pentecost to force her non-GMO quinoa loving views down her students throats.

I had SOCI 310 with Debra and she's an amazing instructor! She is really passionate about Canadian Sociological issues and made the class lively by bringing in documentaries on the topics discussed. Assessment was super fair especially since she gave an outline with questions the midterm and final will cover so theres no excuse to not doing well.

She's a confusing lecturer and a slow grader. I never received the grade for my first research paper, so I didn't know how to improve for the next one (she said she would return it to us, but never did). She's also hard to reach for office hours.

I didn't learn anything in her class. Her slides are vague and make no sense, while her discussions in class can make you go to sleep. She wastes a lot of class on analyzing news articles. Her tests are fair though, not too hard.

Loved this course. Dr. Pentecost will make you passionate about issues that you've never really even thought about before. We had two film review essayspapers, a midterm, and a final, and she was crystal clear about what is expected in all of them. I would definitely recommend this class.

Lectures aren't interesting, she has a kind of voice that makes you zone out. All of her notes are basically off the textbook, if you memorize all of it you'll be set for the exams. Really boring tho

She's alright. Exams really easy, though her wording can be annoyingly imprecise. The material is easy, but her lectures are confusing. Nice person. Doesn't put up her PowerPoints, so go to class to get an idea of what she thinks is important. That way, you'll save some time doing the readings. Easy A, but boring as hell.

Shes not interested in your opinion and probably wouldn't understand it anyway. She knows about what she teaches but that's it; an academic ditz. If you watch movies in class, she spends more than half the class (unnecessarily) pre-explaining what your about to watch. Then she'll stop it every 5mins to re-explain or ruin the ending - SO ANNOYING!!

AMAZING prof. She really knows how to get you into the subject by showing relevant and thought provoking videos/pictures/articles. She's clear about what she's gonna put on the exams and the projects are all clearly outlined. TAs were also very nice. As long as you go to class, you'll do great.

She taught a dreary introductory course with a lot of passion for the subject, and didn't mind straying from the curriculum to show us interesting films and videos pertaining to her lectures. Going to class isn't mandatory if you follow readings, and vice versa.

Amazing Professor, one of the best ones i've had in my UBC undergrad career so far. very approachable although some material was useless in terms of the larger picture of SOCI 310...exams pretty straightforward...overall she's great and very engaging ,make sure you attend her classes and copy down the powerpoints

If possible, choose another professor. This woman has a very liberal bias and does not present a complete picture of the events she discusses. Also, she has no understanding of technology and uses a very ineffective document projector to present her (typed) notes. The subject matter is interesting, but take it from someone else!
