stoney bologna. makes an effort to be a little funny every lecture. It's easy for you and him to get distracted in lectures. Best to ask him questions, he knows his stuff just not how to present it the best.

My favorite history teacher. Took him first for 147b for a g.e., then again for 43 because I liked his class so much. Great teacher who loves what he teaches and his students. Willing to give extra credit just by writing another essay.

Such an awesome teacher. Made the class really enjoyable and I learned more then I thought I would. He is very easy because he just wants to know that you are learning.

Dilip Basu is one of the sweetest most kind professors I have encountered. He is also one of the cutest old Indian man ever. He only wishes for his students to learn, and genuinely cares about them.

Yes, Prof. Basu does have a tendency to ramble and digress, and he's sometimes unclear, but he's very knowledgeable about his subject. If you ask questions or go to his office hours, he will try his utmost to help you. Overall a friendly and funny professor.

Two words. Laser pointer. Haha! He is a very interesting person and knows so much, but I suggest sitting in the front with a large cup of coffee - unless you'd rather take a nap. The content of the course is great, too. All in all, a very worthwhile class if this is a subject you're interested in.

If you can get past the accent, you'll find a funny/smart professor. In my seminar class on Orientalism, I "read" everything ;) The secret is to always read and take notes with page references, and then to be one of the first to discuss (cite a page number). I wrote a marginal at best paper, but got an a because of my class participation.

Dalip has back problems and needs to (ahem) take herbal medicines, sometimes even before coming to class. This would explain his tendency to ramble. But, even in his haze, you can tell he loves what he does and is a tremendous help in office hours. He's also hilarious when he wants to get the attention of the class back.

The worst professor I have yet to encounter at UCSC. In his PAINFULLY boring monotone his discussed nothing relevant and, yet, attendance is mandatory! Although he has offered the class little or no insight into Indian history, he expects the class to write a ten page research paper in a week and a half. I thought he was supposed to teach us?

I liked his class...once I got used to his style. He does kind of ramble, but if you pay attention he gives a lot of interesting little tidbits. And it definitly has not discouraged me from considering history as a major.

you either dig his style or you don't: the readings are pretty self explanatory, so he doesn't go over them too much, he just kinda rambles semi-related stories as they come to mind. vexing if you're depending on him to clarify everything for you, but fine if you're up on the reading. pretty easy. oh yeah- he fed us all the time!

i'm a senior history major, and took this as my last requirement and it was the worst. about 70% of the class brought other books or work to do to the (mandatory) lectures and blocked out everything dilip said. easy, but painful. it makes me sad that classes like these discourage people from taking history classes (take hist w/ levine or thompson)

Dilip Basu was boring, and vague. He often contradicted himself, along with his incoherent manner of speech made it hard to learn. On any given day, you had half the class falling asleep. Although he is very knowledgable with the subject matter, he simply doesn't care.

Yes, he is slightly boring. Yes, he is unclear at times. However, with about 60% effort on your part you can ace the class. No worries. The Final was EASY. He's a nice guy with funny stories.

OK people, you';ve got to dig Basu. He's slow, he's old school, he's boring. But if you talk to him and show him interest, he is very knowledgable. Just try not to disagree with him, and you'll probably get an A.

For the Satyajit Ray class, his personal history/experience with Ray led to some interesting stories/information, however there was also a conflict of interests. If you didn't agree that Ray or a film was great, he'd either get defensive or ignore you.
