Professor Vernallis is a hard professor but she will not let you get an F in her class. She is willing to help you and go over your papers over and over again until you write the way she wants you to write. Furthermore, some students found her easy, I would have to say I found her to be really hard.

The finest teacher I ever had: a brilliant SCL grad of Stanford and Berkeley and a very selfless and kind woman as well. She went out of her way to be help me when I needed it. I'm honestly moved that she teaches poor kids at a place like CSLA when she could easily teach at an ivy league school for considerably more money. Really an unsung hero.

LOVED this class! One paper, midterm, and final. Watched a few videos durig class. No textbook, just had to print the readings. You HAVE to read them to get an A! They're a bit difficult to read but she'll discuss them with you during class. Very passionate about philosophy, so go to her office hours if you have questions!

Reading is fairly difficult but not impossible to understand. Classes are full of group work and it's fun. She grades papers worst than a 400 Level English teacher though. So if you write horribly, RUN RUN RUN!!!!!

Took a chance on class. Tough quarter in personal life. She allows space for error, and gives benefit of doubt. Doesn't call u liar when things get rough. We need more professors like her who don't scold u, yet, are assertive, never fake. Vernallis is patient, smiles even during tense/awkward situations, passionate, knows her stuff. Recommended.

I dont recommended taking phil 459 with vernallis. I found her class boring, she didnt explain the concepts clearly, and shes a lil on the unsane side. Readings are difficult and extremely abstract. 2 essays due before class discussion of those readings and a finalof 2 5-page essays.

Great texts. She knows what she believes. She has an opinion and she makes it known. Comes off as the intellectual elite in the establishment of philosophical discourse. Like Prof Shim, she covers texts to the teeth but you come out with HER VERSION! at the end though I would say she is tolerable. You learn. READ!

Though prof. Vernallis is very passionate, she is only passionate about her OWN philosophical ideas and can only bring herself to respect ideas and comments that coincide with hers. However, she uses great textbooks and covers them fairly well in the lectures.

Dr. Vernallis is very passionate about philosophy. She takes questions patiently and respects your views. 1 four-page paper (not too bad), 1 in-class midterm, 1 take-home final. We talked about Nietzsche and stories by Joseph Conrad, Raymond Carver, Franz Kafka, and Alice Munro. This is a great Block-C class (under "C5 Integrated Humanities").

If you are a male or someone who asks questions don't even dare to take any of her courses. Shes arrogant, an elitist (in many respects), and very unfair. She would make a 'good' LAPD female officer. Don't say you weren't warned. Ask the students.

Great class. She teaches very well. If you hate writing papers but have to take a philosophy class this is the one to take. She helps you write your papers in pairs and with her aid as well. The material is well presented, excellent choice of reading material and movies. She really makes you think about life and what you want. JUST TAKE HER CLASS!

I can't find the upper-level performance required for this course that is dictated. It is just not there. The kind that takes philosophical thinking for debate and discussion.

Brilliant woman who talks entirely too fast. Her paper comments are extremely helpful and she is very in-tune with her students. Her teaching style got me excited about the topics. She handles stupid student questions/comments with grace.

Reading material is difficult, which is disclosed in 1st class meeting. Although, assignments can be ambiguous. Catalog states no prerequisite required (don't be fooled). If you're an artist you will love the course. Otherwise, you will be bored senseless.
